Criterion thinks if you've maxed out the 360, you're not trying hard enough..

Apparently the company that owns Criterion (EA -- duh!) and the company itself don't agree on whether or not the Xbox 360 has been "maxed out." Speaking to Eurogamer, Criterion's technical director Richard Parr said, "That's proof that you're not the best ... it means you're out of ideas."

Dedicated Joystiq Biomass™ members will remember when, just three days ago, vice president of EA Europe Patrick Soderlund said, "I think that we've maxed out the 360 but we haven't maxed out the PS3." So, what is it, folks? Is the 360 already meeting its limits? Will the rumored new Xbox console of Fall 2010 help to assuage Mr. Soderlund's claims? Will Criterion get in a slapfight with EA Europe? We'll just have to wait and see.

Criterion make good racing games. How much can they know about developing for other genres that require different graphical demands?
Also, technical limitation does not convert to idea limitation.

I still think thats beyond the point to be honest. I highly doubt the 360 has actually been maxed out technically and just because a Criterion pretty much only make racing games suddenly it means they dont know the technical limits of a machine, eh?

Graphics are at a point where they are good enough. Instead of working on new engines or spending all your time pushing every polygon, I wish they would just refine the gameplay. What I played of Gears 2 didn't seem much different than Gears 1. It was still a buggy mess online too. Look nice and still played great, just could have been less buggy. Same could be said for most games. Crysis being a great example of this.

I don't care what the xbox or PS3 can do maxed out. The PC is already leaps and bounds ahead of what todays consoles can do. If I want the best technically advanced or best graphics, I play pc games. Consoles should be focusing more on gameplay.

I dont really care about graphics that much.
What impresses me is games where so much goes on at once and no slow down.

Prototype on the PC is a good example of this to me.

I was thinking that when I was playing the 360 version yesterday, so much going on and I don't think its ever stuttered once! Helps with the immersion.

That's exactly what it "converts" to. Tweaking performance out of a fixed platform requires intelligence and novel ideas to get every last drop of performance out of a system. Why do you think only the skilled developers could really push the PS2 when making FF, GT, God of War etc?

Programming for this kind of environment requires flair and ingenuity to generate the best graphics.

what is it with the lost people who feel the need to mention PC's in a console thread?

like i could care less about a PC.

The only reason I mentioned the Pc version of prototype is because I dont have it on consoles.
I hear it is the same on consoles only with a lower resolution.

The whole point of my comment was the fact that I dont care about graphics I want to be able to blow loads of stuff up without the game engine coming to a hault.

I doubt that the 360 has been maxed out. I suspect that the 360 platform is mature enough for a lot of devs to get a lot out of the hardware, but there's always room for improvement. People find ways to squeeze a little bit more out of existing tech with each project they work on.

I was thinking about this last night.... I mean, fable 2, at 1920x1080 on a 8600???

The console is performing fantastically for the hardware it has as it is!
