Ive got a Raptor 150GB and ive installed Windows XP and all my drivers, it works dandy.

I then install the first set of critical updates....roughly 50 files.

The computer then hard drive powers down during windows boot and then the computer resets. Attempts to go restore from an earlier point do not work....safe mode works though.

Ive installed the drive checker and its all okay. MS havent got a clue whats wrong.

Any ideas? Im really stumped :(

So what loads up in windows normally that doesnt load in safe mode?.....

There in lies the answer..

Whats the full specification on your computer, do you get as far as installing service pack 2, or does it fail before that etc.

FX60
Asus A8N32 SLI
2gig Corsair XMSLL3500
2x7900 GTX SLI
150gb Raptor X
Enermax 680w ATX2.2 PSU

Ive ran memtests, gfx tests and the WD software on the drive no problem.

I dont get to SP2, it craps up on the the critical updates before it says you should download SP2.

Do you install all the chipset and SATA drivers, before trying to install the windows updates? And perhaps the AMD Athlon dual core processor driver as well.

If that doesnt work, all I can suggest is you download and apply the critical updates one at a time, instead of all 50 at once, and then you should find exactly which one is causing trouble.

That said, I never download the critical updates before installing the service packs. I download the 'network administrators' install of SP2, which I keep on a CD. That way I can install XP, and upgrade to SP2 before I even attach my computer to the internet.

Maybe its worth trying that on your machine, as with SP2, you'll probably find a lot less critical updates to install.

This is an official link to the complete XP Service pack 2.

Im pretty sure this update will run directly from an XP install, bypassing the need to update to SP1, but I've not done it for a while, so no promises on that.

im downloading SP2 now, i will try and install that first before any other update.

All drivers are on the computer before ive installed any updates.

Ive been thinking of doing one patch at a time, but MS has a tendency to shove patches on you without your knowledge or wishes.

If you disable auto updates, you can specify to ignore certain updates, and once you have ignored them once, it never tries again.

Even works with the Windows Genuine Advantage update.

Once you have told XP to ignore a certain update, even going back to autoupdate will not cause it to download the missing update.

If you ever change your mind and want that update afterall, there is a link on the windows update website, which reactivate blocked updates.

This might not help but...

Ages and ages ago when I put a new PSU in, my PC would get all the way up to the end of the splash screen and restart. Nothing worked, until I put the speed of my processor back -1 FSB... and it worked?! Then again, my PC's weird.
