It's been a long time since i built a rig, last one had a AMD Athlon 4200x2 so out of the loop, lots of stuff to learn.

i put together a list of components for a gaming rig for games like Arma 3 , FSX, other sims like Train Sim 2015 etc.

looking for some opinions on my basket.

budget is about £500.

thanks.

i haven't chosen one yet, ill be using a 720p TV until i get one.

is a 1080p res monitor usually what people play through commonly these days?

so 720p for now , need to wait till i get more money.

thanks for your help. looks good, i think the CPU change is a good one too.

Yes 1080P is the common resolution.

Another option is a overclockable dual core but better GFX card, along with a decent sized SSD.
YOUR BASKET
1 x MSI AMD Radeon R9 285 Gaming Edition 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £139.99
1 x Crucial BX100 250GB SSD SATA 6Gbps 7mm Solid State Drive (CT250BX100SSD1) £79.99
1 x Gigabyte Z97P-D3 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £63.95
1 x Intel Pentium K Anniversary G3258 Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £59.99
1 x Antec TruePower Classic 550w '80 Plus Gold' Power Supply £55.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Savage Red 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (HX324C11SRK2/8) £46.99
1 x Zalman Z1 Midi-Tower USB 3.0 - Black £24.95
Total : £485.95 (includes shipping : £11.75).

Then swap the CPU out later for a better one, being a Z97 board it will get a BIOS update for Broadwell to.

will the 750TI bottleneck the i5 you think?

i think ill stick with i5 but i forgot about a SSD so ill have one of those for windows .

yeah might rethink the GPU , wont be buying till next week, see what's available then.

might even get a cheap monitor from the members market.

so much has changed since i last built a system.

thanks for your help.

AMD's 280 is a better option than the 285.

A 120gb SSD would get you on your way and allow you to add a storage drive later.

Run the stock cooler for a short period, you can upgrade that later, allowing you more budget elsewhere.

You could use a usb to load your operating system?

Would this not be a better card for the money?

If it were a 280X, yes. It still is a good card for the money but 770 is faster.

In BF4 @ 1080p Ultra for example, the difference between the 280 (47 FPS) and 770 (57 FPS) is the same as the difference between the 770 and 290 (67 FPS). Given that the price gap between that 770 and a new 290 is higher then the gap between the 280 and 770, I'd say no, not better for the money. Although there are many ways to look at it, of course. And benchmarks may vary.

Ah, fair enough :) I was always under the impression that the 280 was better 'bang for buck'. But I guess I didn't really take the price drop of the 770 into account.
