critique my tune

I'm not really into D&B as much as I used to be but I'm liking this tune. It reminds me a little of Noisia... Nice and dark but there's still a tune going on! :cool:

The drums sound good, your kick drum sounds like it's been high passed so it isn't clashing with sub-bass of your synth so you've got nice dynamics and it will also shake your internal organs when played out thru a decent soundsystem. ;) Sometimes I always try and improve a song by looking for things to add, yet sometimes taking things out can also improve things. I think maybe have a few parts where there are less or no drums could add some more tension during the breakdown... but apart from that I'm struggling to think of ways to improve it really. I think maybe a few samples in there would work also. :)

EDIT: For the intro, you may want to add some drums at the very beginning, it will make it easier for a DJ to mix.

the kick has only had a valve compressor applied to it, nothing more. i wanted it to stand out a bit, so compressed it separately from the other drum components which i've never done before, yet very pleased with the result.

so far, that's really a rough arrangement, so will need to fiddle some of the bar-ends so there is a bit of variation, but that'll be done when i'm fine tuning it. i'm still not entirely happy with the drops, i mean, they're pretty standard as far as drops go, so i think i'm going to have a sit down and come up with something better.

vocal samples are just a pain, but yes i definitely need some in there. i could use some street fighter speech cuts (like so many before have done!), but the only reason i called the tune that is cos i was playing it a fair bit when i started to write the tune. i'm thinking of getting a decent horror/scifi film and sampling that... any recommendations?

hehe the intro is literally a few bars laid out, i do intend to get some percussion in there, but i'm going to redo the intro, it's purely there just so there is an intro. i'm thinking of doing something quite dark, similar to something raiden or spl would do
 
Tries to hard to be dark and eery. The breaks are pretty standard and repetitive. Should get a midi pad controller, assign the slices of the amen to each pad and manually program them in.

That said, I'm a fan of Donny and Current Value's drum programming. Lots of clanging and snares wound tight.

yeah as i said, the intro hasn't been worked on really, i just used that to build it... i'm going to go for something with less synth noises and more percussion i think

i'm not really going for dark and eerie, as i've always had a trancey sort of background, so it's more trance and bass. most of the d'n'b i listen to is techy/neuro, but i don't want to make something akin to cooh or counterstrike, i want it to be a bit more floaty, like trance is.

cba with getting a midi pad, i'm going to tweak the breaks a lot, as this is pretty much a copy paste job on the beats just so it rolls through the track. all that fine tweaking will come later :)

i'm going to be working on this again tomorrow, so i'll post an updated version once i've got something :)

good sequencing, not really my thing as far as dnb goes but it sounds like it could be from 1995! unless that's the style you were after?
 
This track is similar to what I would expect from Prodigy. I like it.

Is it not possible for you to have some vocals on it (or at least make the track more "vocal friendly").

In terms of commercial clout, I think adding lyrics to a track like this would be beneficial.

A recent example which comes to mind is Magnetic Man's "I need air". On its own the music was okay, however, once the lyrics were added, it sounded better and was more typical of something which would do well in the charts (and sell).

The above assumes that you want to sell to the mass market.

PS. What is your aim? Are you making music as a hobby (and don't care about selling records), or would you like your tracks to sell? Is the commercial/business aspect of your music important to you?
 
Its a good start mate, I think its lacking some variety though, as the first 2, and last sections are all alike with nothing really going on in the breakdown and no build up or climax after it. I do like the style though, very Nosia like :)
