CROSS OVER CABLE

I have purchased a Cross-over cable to connect my laptop to my desktop but my desktop doesn't have the necessary card(?). If (when) I update my desktop from a PIII, 450 Ghz with a newer computer running vista will I be able to use cross-over from Windows Home Edition (lap-top) to the new Vista (desktop)?

Or will there be a software conflict, ie do both OS have to be the same?

Shouldn't this thread be in networks? :p

A crossover cable will let any device with a NIC connect to any other device with a NIC. I've done it windows/windows windows/linux and windows/osx so I don't see why there should be any problems with Vista

Yes, sorry for posting in the wrong place (I wish the postman said that to me) and Thanx for your advice.

afaik when connecting 2 computers using X-over cable all you need to do is change your workgroup on both PCs to be the same.

  • Rright click your My Computer icon, properties and then computer name i think.
Should work after that. Different OS hasnt affected me before I have done it on 2k and XP.

As said above.
Operating system is irrelevant.
Workgroup is irrelevant.
Resistance is futile.
A crossover cable is all you need.

Good News, thanx Guys. :)

Thanx I'm a bit more concerned about my next computer which might have Vista installed and its compatability with my laptop running Win XP. I'm reluctant to spend any money (my pockets only open one way to put money in NOT to take it out) on my old one (Just a hammer from B & Q) in view of the way it has been playing up lately!

But..... The cable looks like it's got an Ethernet Connector on each end? I have to use USB to connect to NTL Broadband with my Desktop and Ethernet when using the laptop. I've never tried using both at once and wonder if that would work?

SO....

Am I right to asume that the two computers would be connected with the X-over cable from Ethernet to Ethernet? If that is the case how is the one of the computers connected to the Modem?

(go on have a good laugh but I really don't know) :D

are you trying to share the internet connection between the desktop and the laptop? if so it would be much easier to get a Router.

These will allow you to create a LAN much easier than a P2P network using a crossover cable.

Basically, the ntl modem will connect to the router via an ethernet cable, then the router can connect to your desktop via ethernet cable and your laptop via wireless connection (assuming your laptop has wireless functionality).

Freakish_05 he doesn't want to spend money on a router.... £5 for a NIC that will allow you to use both machines online is worth doing if you already have the cable ? As stated TCPIP is a cross platform standard, almost anything that has a functional TCPIP stack will connect to anything else with one.

If it makes you feel any better i've got XP Home/Pro box's networked with Vista box's and even a win95 box (Before anyone laugh's at the win95 box it'd cost circa 2k to upgrade the engraving system SCU/card/software to get that box off the LAN so it's not going to happen unless something get's FUBAR'd).

Aye, get yourself an NIC and some internet connection sharing if your using a USB modem.

We'll await your return to set that up.
