Cross Over Or Straight Through

Hi

Just trying to find out what type of ethernet cable i'd need to connect my cable modem to my router I have both types of cables but I can't tell which is which and only one of them works, but I need that working cable for something else.

Either should work fine.

if you look at the heads too see the cable you'll see the 8 coloured wires. In a straight cable the order is the same at both ends, on a crossover the cable are in reverse order at one end.

A straight cable should work for what you want.

That is rollover.

i thought it was in spec to have either 586a or 586b on both ends of a straight cable, althouh just about everyone uses 586b

Yeah I tried looking at both ends of the cable but it was too hard to see what way the wires were. I've ordered a straight through cable as from what I know it seems to be the right one anyway even though I thought most things had auto sensing now.
