Cross platform gaming

I dont know if this has already happend i'm new to the pc gaming scene, but i believe microsoft were going to release live anywhere so pc gamers can play online with xbox gamers, like xbox live but with pc users aswell. is this going on or is it still a dream

this idea would be fantstic for call of duty or left for dead something with good scope for multiplayer. this would also add some light to the discussion what platform is better pc or console.

I don't think it would be very fair to be honest; I'm not knocking console gamers but a large percentage of them are 12-year-old n00bs and add the fact that they'd be trying to aim with a joypad, they'd get slaughtered.
