Wasn't sure if to put this in the game section but was wondering why have we not seen Cross-Platform Gaming - For example what is stopping us from playing fifa or cod against ps3 vs ps4 players or ps4 vs pc players or xbox vs ps4... yes I know the better hardware (e.g ps4 or pc) would have a advantage because of better graphics / processor but still I think it would revolutionize gaming and surely it would benefit xbox and playstation (Microsoft / Sony) because most people buy the console what there mates buy to play them online... but if all your mates bought a ps4 but you preferred Xbox then you can still play fifa against your mates. What is stopping this from happening and will it ever happen in the future?

I know with windows 10 you can play against xbox but is this the first step to for example ps4 vs xbox or xbox vs wii over a game of fifa / cod or whatever? or will it never happen and why? I seem to recall news about ps3 brining out counter strike GO and you would be able to play against pc users over steam but this never happened as far as i'm aware?

Im not sure of the reasoning but I think it would be amazing and this feeling has been reinforced since playing GTA V on PC. Imagine cross platform crews!

I think it would be amazing to do this

The main issue with Console and PC cross platform gaming, are the controls. Can you imagine COD/CS with a controller vs keyboard and mouse? If you are correct by saying PC players and Xbox players can play together (Windows 10), then it would certainly be interesting to see how well it would work as a whole.

But I agree about console cross platform, it would make sense. I guess really it's just MS/Sony that are preventing this? I can't see any other reason, even with different hardware, you can just tone things down if needs be to get similar performance.

One issue would be getting rivals Sony and Microsoft to open each others online platform up, which wont be happening anytime soon.

some games did it in the past, pc gamers just owned the console players using control pads.

one of the quake games even back on the dreamcast played against pc players much to their amusement

Portal 2 had cross platform co-op.

It wouldn't work for competitive as someone would have too much of an advantage, whether that's 60/120fps vs 30, keyboard and mouse, and so on. For some games (GTA V) console would have an advantage with the lock on aiming. Just not a level playing field which ever way you look at it.

See for me I don't feel controllers is a reason... for example you can plug I a controller into a pc so if you play fifa on pc you can play controller vs keyboard.

Or on PS4 you can plug in a third party keyboard and mouse to play against cod users and you can hardly say it's cheating.

Did not know you could play dreamcast vs pc but that goes back to my original questions... why have more companies / games followed on?

I think if you asked games there would be a high % who would like this and surely boost console sales due to you wouldn't have to buy the same console your circle of mates bought...win win to me

For games that don't involve the accuracy of the mouse, then yeah it's not a big deal. But I can guarantee that most people will use a controller on the console, and would be very reluctant to buying a mouse and keyboard just to be more competitive in FPS games.

They have been saying it for years and tried a couple of times... apart from the technical problems the main stumbling block was that PC is just far superior and can hold a considerable advantage. With the higher performance of PCs and with precise high sensitivity mice a console player on a pad has big disadvantage. I think they trialed a match between pc players and console players some years ago and well they shocked how badly the console players got annihilated. There's only 2 way i can see it working 1. Next Gen consoles have mice or 2. Have cross-platform but keep them segregated like Eve Online did, PC players were in Space in their spaceships and the consoles players became the ground forces on the Planets.

But yeah for others games like Fifa or even racing games i don't see why not.

But that's not what the companies want, do they? They want the majority; not what's "good" for the players. Do you think they would rather sell 2 of their own consoles, or sell 1 and allow cooperation with their main competitor, and it's not like Sony and Microsoft are gonna merge any time soon.

It's nothing to do with the controller vs keyboard+mouse argument. Valve wrote a blog post about it somewhere in the early days of CSGO. The reason is because I think Microsoft/Sony had too much control over how frequently the game would be updated over Xbox Live/PSN. Also there were development issues and they were worried about potential fragmentation. Valve obviously wanted to keep full control and clearly saw the Steambox as a way to bypass this problem.

War Thunder is available on PC and PS4, same game, same matches, both formats in the same PvP battles.

They also handily put a * next to the PS4 players so you can be lenient towards them murder them with excessive brutality so that they see the error of their console-peasant ways. :)

One way it can work as I see it is when a game becomes bigger than the platform, so the game devs/publishers can wave guaranteed sales under the noses of ms/Sony etc. And offer them a cut of the profits.

Another way which has been rumored is that you can combine fps with rts, so you could have an eve type game but more strategy based, and some clan members on different platforms could do in space dog fighting, or to take over a planet, literally put troops on the ground in a more fps style environment, with all those aspects linked up it could make for a leviathan of a game.

War thunder is cross platform.

When I play on my ps4 I'm meh. When I'm on the pc I own PlayStation players.

The trouble with cross platform is that it doesnt provide a level playing field. It becomes an extreme form of pay to win.

But take a game like fifa for example...surely it wouldn't matter if your pc /xbox /ps4?

Other issue is the appalling rate at which console games get their patches.
PC updates would suffer, we're used to being able to get them the moment it's ready for consumption, sometimes too early but hey.

Asking EA to do anything other than screw everyone over isn't happening :D To be honest, I haven't had a home console since the Dreamcast, but I've been at peoples houses when they are on Xbox live and the level of ass-hattery that goes on... is not for me. Consoles can keep their mentally handicapped citizens
