Firstly, i apologise if this is the kind of thread which comes up too often, but a quick search provided nothing.:)

Until recently, i played a bit on Xbox Live, for the reason that my mates, who i played BC2 with, do not have gaming PC's.
Also, we could chat on Live, and had some good games.
However, i have just got my new PC, and so have been getting my latest games on it.( i have always played on PC, but only had a laptop, so couldn't for example handle BC2, Crysis etc, or latest games very high)

Problem comes when Battlefield 3 comes out, obviously, we will al get it, but i'll be getting it on PC, whilst they will get it on Xbox.
I know, that Battlefield 3 can't go cross-platform, but my question is, how realistic is it to make a cross-platform FPs?
Are ther any even?
What would the problems be?

cheers:)

I think the main issue lies with dual analog v keyboard and mouse...
It would be like holding a midget at arms length.. :D

That's why console games all have a minor aim assist built in and very little recoil

Unrealistic, but it has been done. Shadow Run supported cross platform play.

And without baiting too many fanbois/elitists:

It doesn't work because of the vastly differing level of control available. Disregarding who saw who first, tactics etc. 1 v 1, a pad player stands little chance against a M+K player. I know lots of players great with a pad, but in the end the speed you can turn is always limited to the peripheral rather than your own movement speed.
I think Shadow Run limits the turn speed of M+K to counter this, but it just didn't work imo.

I don't think we'll see support for M+K on consoles (on M+K only servers), as you'd end up fracturing the communities for games in half. Pretty much as happened with UT3 on the PS3.

I honestly can't see it working for certain types of game. FPSs and RTSs are a prime example. As for some other types of gameplay? Why not. Racing games, Sports games, Beat 'em ups, and some action adventure games would work fine.

Dungeon Defenders is going to have Mobile/Console/PC cross platform I believe?

shadowrun is a crossplatform fps. Its not a very good game though.

Balancing the controls between controler vs kb/m seems to be the big issue

It will never happen as PC is way too superior by far so its utterly pointless now. MS even did a bit of research & came to this conclusion but the following were developed before MS canned it & already have free to play cross platform vs Xbox 360. All can be bought quite cheaply nowadays & all use GFWL for MP & LIVE Achievements:

Lost Planet Extreme Colonies Edition
Universe At War
Blazblue Calamity Trigger
Shadowrun
Game Room

One of the other reasons why it never took off was that the console version also needs to have the cross platform code included @ launch on the disc this cannot be patched in later apparently!

I used to play unreal tournament and Quake 3 online with my dreamcast, using a mouse and keyboard.

It was just laughable really. I could go like 20-0 in deathmatches, and I'm not even a great player. On the PC I was average at UT, and crap at quake.

Portal 2 will be crossplatform I believe. You'll be able to play with/against people on the PS3. It should work okay since it's a co-operative game.

Any game that pits PC against console will always be biased towards those on PC due to the greater levels of control.

it's interesting really, more problems than i originally thought.
i suppose it's the reason no games have native kb support on consoles. I moaned a hell of a lot about the controls for BC2 on Xbox, i found it almost unplayable.

How about a game such as Fifa, you pretty much need a controller for that anyway? can you play cross-platform on that?

Done before by the likes of Quake 3, which at the time was probably one of the most anticipated online FPS of all time. And even then it never really took off, although to be fair neither did the Dreamcast.
