Cross-threaded hsf screw

I have an evo33 hsf which I have managed to cross-thread one of the retaining screws when attaching to my mobo. The hsf uses a backplate typical of most heavy hsf's. The whole screw assembly rotates when I try to loosen the retaining screw and there is very little of the retaining lug visible to get a good purchase with some mole grips. I can use the p.c. only after lying it on its side and placing a spare psu on top of the hsf to force it to sit squarely on the cpu and provide adequate cooling - not a long term solution I'm sure you'd agree!

Anyone have any suggestions?

Mmm, so the metal lug is actually turning, and not fixed to the backplate?
If the backplate is metal and the lug passes through it, you could try soldering the lug to the backplate so it can't turn.
