Hey I wasn't sure if this was suitable for the PC games or the GFX card section so here it is ;D

I was wondering if anyone is playing BF3 on Crossfire 4890s and what settings/fps are you getting?

I recently bought my brother a single 4890 and he says he was on mostly high settings and it was fine for him but I got him to do the ingame fps monitor and he said it was ranging between 30-45 I think which for me is a little too low. He was running a 8800GTX so what he has is an upgrade as he was lagging on all low before so I know he's happy and I'd like to get him a second one, just wondering if it was worth it.

His system:

E8600 @ 4.3Ghz
4Gig ram
Asus Rampage Formula

More than capable with the gfx being the bottle neck, I would think crossfire 4890s would give him at the very least 60fps?

im not sure if the cpu would be up to it, my brother has 5850CF but in bf3 it was only using 50% of each gpu on his amd tricore at 3.5ghz but he got an i7 yesterday and now both cards run at 100% and the gains are very noticable.

There was a thread about the newer CPUs running at 80fps even on 2 cores.. so I think it should be ok especially at the overclock it has but I guess we'll know for sure soon enough :D

Looks like two 4890s according to benchmark reviews is slightly better than my 5870 and tbh the CPU he has, I wasnt getting any slow down in games when I had it.. as its my old cpu ;)

go for it then, i was just letting you know about the tricore not being able to run 2 5850's, his cpu ran perfect with 1 card and it ran at 100% but 2 cards gave the same fps and they were only using around 40-50% on each card till he got an i7.

Oh right cool, appreciated mate tis why I post here :)

I guess we'll only know when we know.. on the plus side if I need a quad core, I'm sure the e8600 will make a massive dent in the cost of a quad.. and then after that if its still not solved.. will be a whole system revamp.

you may be ok with them only being the 48xx series and if not then get a cheap quad, i swapped my Q6600 for an E8500 but then sold that to get my current quad and i'm glad i have one again.

i'm getting another 5870 soon so i'm hoping it will be ok too :D

Whats your FPS like on that setup? I get around 60-80fps most the time, rarely drops below 60 from what I've seen.

i run all ultra settings with textures and shadows at high and no deffered AA and no motion blur and i average around 50fps on caspian.

what about you? can you run ultra textures without stuttering?

I leave it all on high settings, hbao on, no deffered aa or motion blur, AFx16.

I think I get about the same as you on ultra, I just dont like it.. Im not sure if its because I know its lower than 60fps or if its because I can see it but I dont really see much of a difference between ultra and high but then again high looks stunning anyway
