Hi as the title says i am looking to pick up a couple of 7770's for crossfire.

I think this would make a nice upgrade but have concerns about my mobo psu.

At the moment i have

GTX460 768mb @ 800mhz
1090t BE @ 3.6
M4A89GTD PRO
8GB of Kingston HyperX Genesis 1600MHz

and a PC world 750w psu i got one sunday when my old one packed in.

i pretty sure i will need a new psu but is it worth trying to crossfire with this mobo?

my other option is to wait for the 78xx cards but was thinking i would get more bang from £200 with crossfire 7770's or even a couple of 6850's

EDIT i game at 1080p

Hi,

As i'm sure others will say, spend your money on a Decent Branded PSU first (750W again should be fine) especially as you are contemplating xfire.

Unless you have your heart set on new tech wouldn't the OCUK current offer on the 6850 be cheaper and perform better?

The board will be fine as it does crossfire in 8x/8x which is fine for all but the dual chip cards. That psu will need replacing first though.

I would get the cheaper 6850's over a pair of 7770's as well. In fact you could get a pair of 6870's for the same price as 7770's if you shop around.

As suggested your best bet might be to get a better psu for around half you budget and try and source a 2nd gtx 460 and sli them.

What Games are you looking to play? Resolution?

Sli'd GTX460 768mb would run out of Vram on most of todays games.
1GB is already pushing it if gaming at 1080P

7850's are due 2GB of Vram so that would be better, but there is speculation they may only be as powerful as a 6950 2GB. as i say though any info on the 7850 performance and price is just speculation at the moment

2GB 6950's can be had for £170 (fact this is what i paid for mine last week!)

is the psu an XFX , ocz or corsair? those are the 3 brands that pc world sell for 750watt ;)

honestly i would get the 6850 on ocuk right now - tis a good offer

If your PSU has the correct connectors it will be fine.

I mean FFS, not exactly grid downing power pigs are they?

A couple of 6850s, or as mentioned above 6870s can be had for cheaper or around the same price with better performance. Anyone buying a 7770 at its current price really needs their head looking at!

7770 is the biggest fail in gfx cards releases, I would stay well clear - cheaper and faster cards are out there - 460, 6850. SlI/CF with those will be very good too.

just been into the loft to dig out the box of the psu and its 650w not 750w

one of the reviews i saw the CF 7770's were getting towards a gtx 580 performance, this seemed like good value if i could get them for around £200

but it looks like either 2 x 6850's or a 7850 with the 2gb of vram going by the opinions so far

except the 460 is out of production and the 6850 is End Of Line

True, but they are still excellent cards and are still available to buy - so being older shouldn't count against them too much.

I would seriously invest in a new PSU, especially if you are planning to run one or two medium-end graphics cards. For one thing, that PSU only has a singe PCIE power connection, but is rated at 650W.

As mentioned earlier, reputable PSU brands include Corsair, Antec, Enermax, XFX, Seasonic, BeQuiet and OCZ.

As for the graphics card options, I would either go for a single HD 7850 2GB when they come out next month, or buy a HD 6950 2GB now if you can't wait.

Two slower cards (like 6850s) will provide better framerates in most circumstances, but you will be stuck with only 1GB usable VRAM, constant issues with crossfire scaling/drivers and possibly micro-stutter. Therefore, it is usually best to buy a single fast card first, then when you need more power you can either add a second card later on (when prices go down) or simply upgrade it with the next gen

That's assuming that rating is accurate,

After looking for more information on "high power plus" power supplies - there is basically no information on these PSUs available, neither reviews or testimonials and no information on who makes them and one of their biggest features is their "one year warranty".

Basically that PSU is one of the "generic no-brand" PSUs everyone is warned not to buy - since there is no way to ensure a quality unit with clean outputs that won't explode when you look at it the wrong way.

If you are planning to run £200 worth of brand new graphics card then I wouldn't have that PSU in the same building, never mind powering them.

tbh i did look at the rating and the 80plus - reading some more , i would look at a nice new psu

edit:

funny story about dodgy psu`s - a good friend built a pc and used a non name 500w job - he had the mobo replaced twice , the ram once and replaced the video card before he bought a 500w ocz psu - not had 1 trouble since :(

Hang about, if the ops got £200 to spend on a GPU why are people even advising he crossfire or SLi? (myself included doh! :o)

For £200 I'd be purchasing a decent single card solution, something like a 6950 2GB, second hand 480/570 or even a 560ti 2GB.

That PSU still needs upgrading first though :p
