Crossfire and Microstutter

For most games I have noticed little, if any stuttering. When playing Fear 2 and the DLC it was the complete opposite as when you turned in one direction the fps went from say around 30 ish to 60, which 'felt' fine. However, once you spun round the other way it would drop back down to 30 or so again. This was quite irritating. Once the DLC came out and I got a similar performance issue, I did start to wonder if this was to be a common occurrence.

Fortunately not. :)

This is not microstuttering, just FPS drops.
 
4000 series had micro-stuttering issues, and as far as i know, the 5000 series do not have any micro-stuttering.
 
ive got 2 5770,s, if i dont have vsync on i get stuttering, yet the frame rate would suggest i shouldnt, turn vsync on its perfect.
 
I had micro stutter with my olde 4870x2 this was about 1 year ago
I never hung onto it because I ironically wanted the card to work well out of the box
Some games even worked better with only one gpu enabled
 
Microstuttering is not FPS dependable, this is why it has been a significant problem in the past. You could have 150 FPS and your game would felt like below 30.
 
yeah, but it seems more likely to occur at the lower frame rates

In my experience not so much , even if you are hammering out a really fast framerate say anything over the monitors refresh rate (eg 60 Hz)
You can still get a frame that takes longer to generate than the "normal" ones
this will introduce a delay that will most certainly be noticeable.

I mean my 4870x2 was generating more frames than the single card it replaced BUT because
the framerate was not constant/consistant it was more jittery than the single card with a steady fps.
 
I read somewhere that microstutter on newer systems is due to cores being switched on and off on multicore cpus whilst your playing games etc. I'll try dig up where I read it as it also had a guide on how to stop it doing it, fixing the issue for most people

i have 2 4870 crossfired, i get no stuttering...., it was true but its now a myth made by nvidia fanboys probabley.

It was originally ATI "fanboys" who perpetrated the myth (so to speak) when early 38xx drivers suffered from it badly in crossfire (fixed long ago), they tried to tar all multi GPU setups with the same brush in attempt to deflect attention. Microstutter as such is inherent to all current multiGPU implementations but generally its completely impossible to actually notice it unless the problem is exacerbated by other issues.

But it was visible in SLI setups too :)

9800GX2 had noticeable "microstutter" but that was due to a hardware issue rather than the classic microstutter problem. Sometimes its apparent on SLI systems but thats usually because the cards are running different clockspeeds i.e. its not completely unusual for certain configurations for the 1st card to run full clocks in 3D but the 2nd card only running 2D or low power 3D clocks. Which is why I always reccomend getting GPU-z out to check the actual clocks while running 3D on SLI systems.
