Crossfire confusion

OK so I've got a crossfire compatible motherboard and a X1800XT. Am I right in thinking I need to find a crossfire X1800XT aka "rocking horse poo" to get crossfire working or have things moved on and can I get it working with just another standard X1800XT?

I know that I'll probably see better performance with a single X2xxx when they launch but they are not exactly going to be in the same price bracket as another 1800.

You need an x1800 master card still im afraid, only the x1900/x1950's etc.. dont require them anymore, they never did the software crossfire (through the drivers) for the x1800's as they had already stopped their production months before they added the crossfire into the drivers so a master was not required anymore.

Sorry to hijack the thread but saves a new one. Does that mean that as I have a Connect 3D X1950XT 256mb card that I bought here, could I just put in another one the same and crossfire via the drivers. I notice some are crossfire2 but not my one so would I need a mastercard also. Thanks.

only crossfire 2 cards work without a master, if its crossfire 1 it will require the X1950 master

It doesn't, Crossfire can now be done in the drivers for x1900's/x1950's, all he needs is another x1950, there is a performance hit though when doing it the software way (through drivers). :)

Software Crossfire was started in the CAT 6.11's, no master cards have been required since then.

Taken from the 6,11's Release notes :-

New Features

This release of Catalyst® introduces software CrossFire™ support for any combination of Radeon® X1900 and X1950 installed in a system running either the Windows XP or Windows XP Professional x64 Edition operating system.

They done away with the master card as the master cards were very thin on the ground, you couldn't get them anywhere, only reason you still need an x1800 master card still is because the x1800's were well out of production before they did away with the master cards, so an x1800 master is still required. :)
