Crossfire gpu memory question

Hi

I have 2 6950's in xfire both with 2gb of ram. I thought that using the cards in xfire only 2gb would be available to me. I was looking at afterburner today and noticed whilst gaming my gpu memory usage was higher than this. Is it afterburner not reading it correctly or something else?

For ATI cards in crossfire afterburner reports the total memory used...in other words, divide that by 2.
