I keep reading how if you plan to crossfire you should go i7 so it doesnt bottleneck the cards. But how much would an overclocked i5 hold back 5850 Crossfired?

Not as much as you might think, assuming a good overclock :p..

What I would suggest, however, is sticking to one 5850 and seeing where that gets you. You can always add more later if you're not satisifed with resolution/AA/etc., but with a 5850 imho you shouldnt have to go crossfire for most modern games that you'd be playing.

Is this thread hypothetical or are you planning a rig? :)

I currently have only the one 5850, and am quite pleased with it. Obviously wouldnt need a 2nd one at the moment, it was more of if i ever needed a 2nd one i wouldnt really want to upgrade cpu etc again.

Well then it all really comes down to where and how you hit your limit. You should be able to tell which component's holding back your system when that time comes with some selective performance tests. For now, enjoy your lovely i5/5850 rig :D

How far have you clocked your i5? :)

i have a 5850 and did think about going xfire later, but i came to a possible conclusion that then i would have to sell 2 out of date gfx cards if i wanted something better, at the rate cards are progressing, i expect it makes more sense and saves money just to keep one really good card rather than 2 average cards

i have been thinking about this cause my gfx card is definitly the weakest link in my system, even tho its a new system, i will probably change my gfx card before getting an SSD for example

This is what im thinking of ordering, i have everything else to go with it. Thoughts?
