Just started with 7950's in crossfire .
Running Gpu'z every now and then and noticed that the second gpu was given only limited imfo and appeared to be running at full pelt at all times.

LtMatt kindly advised that as ULPS was enabled that this would not continue and the 2nd gpu would clock back , possibly to zero, when not in use.

Each time I've been on since the 2nd gpu has logged itself at full whack , apparantly at all times and then tonight:-

Ran it before having a play on Bioshock Infinate DLC and noted usual full speeds - After playing thought it sounded a little noisy and checked to find that it was running at full whack and was showing 99% gpu load.

Waited for a few minutes - no change

Decided to switch off - Did, but later turned it back on and ran gpu'z which now shows the 2nd card running at the usual lower speeds and a 0% load

I am not willing to run with the 2nd gpu running 99% ; no matter that it was my intention to watercool so at the moment my thoughts are that either I need an answer as to what the h...is going on + a solution (Input greatly appreciated :))

or I'll be returning the block I've just bought and selling the second gpu - which I would prefer not to.

Would just lastly observe that I tried sli twice and dropped it upon both occasions because of heat+power+driver issues BUT thought that by now such problems would have been settled - apparantly not :( or maybe it is just me ?

Have just tried Bioshock again - all looks normal now ! (i.e. clocking up and down , gpu load up and down etc)

What IS going on?

Will probably just accept that it appears to have cured itself but.....

Scan - bit defender- ran yesterday ;Am running a scan now- just in case

Ran a scan - nothing except a note to update windows as it's found some for today and to re-boot so that the virus updates can fully install.

After update re-booted .

Now gpu-z shows 2nd gpu running at full whack and gpu usage is showing 99% ( after not being visible at all until I re-started the program 3 or 4 times.)

As they say - HELP.

I feel such a newb ! ! !

Don't use gpu-z to report gpu usage, it can go a bit crazy at times doing exactly what you describe, full pelt sometimes, off other times, use AB's monitor panel and watch the gpu usage there instead.

Switching off ulps would make your 2nd gpu sit on normal reduced clocks when not in use, it wouldn't make it run on full load all the time.

You have to check that there is nothing in your system using 3d clocks that you may not be aware that that's what they do, eg, if you have java installed, it can make the 2nd gpu run at full speed too if a java enabled app/window is present on the desktop-like JDownloader for instance.

Also pull up your Task Manager and go through active processes and try and kill any off that you don't know why they are running.

If you have ULPS enabled, your second GPU will switch off when not in use, this means monitoring programs cannot read any of the sensors because the card is, to all intents and purposes, unplugged. GPUz gets around this by always running the second GPU at 99% so it's active and the program can then read the sensors.

Try looking inside your case at your second GPU fan when you're idling at desktop without GPUz running - it should be still if ULPS is enabled. Alternatively, use CCC to look at your second GPU under overdrive - that should show 0% usage.

In this case, it's the tool you're using to monitor usage causing the usage - I can see how that would drive you nuts trying to talk it down, it did me!

I had this - never did get to the bottom of it - did a re-install of windows and all was ok.

ULPS should be disable if overclocking and xfire'ing. You can leave it enabled if the clocks are stock.

My thanks to you posters - having retrieved the toys thrown out of the pram - have decided to try to get this sorted over this weekend.

If I cannot get it resolved I will return/sell on but given your input I am a little more condfident that I can get it resolved to my satisfaction.:)

Would never have thought that gpu-z itself could be the cause

We shall see - my thanks again.

Don't sell it - re-install windows. That will sort it.

Quick download of AMD system monitor (thanks thommybhoy) and ran it - 0% usage :)
Ran gpu-z - 99% usage :(

Turned gpu-z off - 0% usage :)

I think we have found the culprit :D
