crossfire or not?

How well does crossfire work if the mobo has only 1 PCIE x16 and the other at x4.
I was thinking on getting another 6850 and crossfire them instead of paying £200+ on an altogether better card. will I see an improvement that would be worth it.

There are conflicting reports, some say it is fine some don't like it at all. Some people get decent frame rates but v. noticeable micro-stutter. Personally I wouldn't do though. I've also heard of a few cases where using x16/x4 crossfire will use up all the available PCIE lanes so anything in x1 slots will not work.

What's the full spec of your rig? might get a better idea with that info.

For how much it will cost you for a 6xxx series card you may as well sell it an purchase a 7xxx series card you'll get way better performance an the option to x-fire at a later date if needed.

You make a strong point, i have seen the light now. OK then any opinions on a card that plays the total war series (and the up coming rome 2) the best, £200 max.
Iv always owned amd cards so i'm lost when it comes to nvidia.

Dont bother with the 7870, get a 7850 an Oc it some of the 7850 cards get the same result as a 7950.

But i would 100% go with the MSI products they carry a 3 year warranty an if any thing goes wrong Ocuk provide a great replacement service

Its better to be covered.
