OcUK are offering a great deal on the 4870 1gb at the moment and my m8 is wondering if it is ok to mix a 4870 512mb with a 4870 1GB in crossfire:confused: He asked me to do a post on here as he is a keen reader of the forum but for some reason he has been unable to sign up?. I think it should be ok but its not my money:D

As above, and for further reference, you can mix any two cards from the same series, eg 2 x 4800's or 2 x 3800's but you cant mis across series' eg 4800 + 3800 = No No

I think that's what he meant. Also if tile-based rendering is working properly then he will have access to 1.5gb of texture memory.

Not sure of any games that support it though?

ah ok. Tile-based rendering is cool but never seems to be supported. Each card basically renders little bits of the screen and if 1 card finishes it's job before the other than it will just continue to render the remainder of the scene. In other words, 1 card doesn't have to "wait" for the other to finish.

Hi have managed to join the forums now so hello all . I am the friend mr griffin was talking about. 1st of all is gd to hear these cards will xfire , the other issue that i'm not to sure about is the fact that the 512 card that i have has the bios flashed to the asus top bios (purely cose it has better fan control), i just wondered if any 1 knows if this will cause problems with xfire. Ty

No you should be fine on that one, Anyway CCC I think has very good fan control works well for me.
And welcome to the forums, this is a very good place for help, lots of people that are very knoledgable

I used to run tile based in TMS you could see the chequerboard when Alt Tabbing for split second, but that's down to the driver as it does not run in that mode any more & you had a bit of control back then with some games with what mode it ran in.

I used to able to play Q4 in Scissors or AFR depending on A.I settings.

Ok have tried both these cards in xfire and does'nt seem to work or just not getting any proformance gain , have tried everything i can think of i.e different drivers ( tried 9.1, 8.12 and 8.12 hotfix ), have used a single xfire bridge and also 2 bridges , tried in opposite pci-e slots just does'nt seem to make a difference. in ccc when i have ticked the xfire enable box a message comes up below saying "these 2 cards r not a perfect match but will still run in xfire"gpu-z see's them as running in xfire as well but just no difference in games or in bench marks. Tbh i was thinking that these cards just were'nt compatible in xfire but ccc enables them so not to sure ,the only other expaination would maybe be my psu its a thermatake 750 watt has 3 main 6-pin x pci-e leads and was using 1 x 4 pin-6pin lead which comes with the card , there was nothing else plugged in on the 4 pin lead was straight from psu to 6-pin adapter.
Hope some1 can sshed some light on this for me cheers
Also running on vista x64
