Crossfire - Same Series / Different Models - 3 Q's

Hi all

With AMD about to launch its 9000 range and the consequential reduction in price of their 7000 series, I am considering crossfiring another card with my ASUS 7950 Top.

My current card is a chunky 3 slot type and my power supply is at the bottom of the case, so another 3 slot card my lead to soaring temperatures. This is if another one fits at all!

Do you guys envisage any problems if I go for a 2 slot card of different brand (not ASUS)?

Should AMD Catalyst Control Center sort out frequency and memory discrepancies or might I be fiddling around with stuff reductio ad absurdum?

With price reductions, can I crossfire my 7950 with a 7990 or would this be ridiculous?

You can crossfire a 7950 with a 7990, but you'll have a hefty bottleneck, and probably heat problems.

Depending on what your second card is cooler wise, will determine if there's heat problems.

I suppose that I don't have to keep the 7950 in the rig if I did get a 7990. My thinking was that I would run the 7990 as the main card and crossfire it with the 7950 to save it just lying around.

So when you say about the sizable bottleneck, do you mean between the two cards or with the CPU? If it is between the cards, would a 7990 run better on its own?

I just assumed crossfiring the 7950 with the 7990 would produce the best results.

Could always crossfire the 7990 + 7950 for tri fire and if it does not work out then just sell the 7950

Why not buy a second 7950 ( the His IceQ Boost @ £185 ) for crossfire instead of £479 on a 7990. The His card vents the heat out of the rear of the case.

This is what I would do personally or maybe even a 7970 there are benchmarks about for haven etc on here providing it will fit in your case obviously
