Would there be any point in companies selling crossfire/SLI matched pairs of graphics cards? These days pretty much the only way to buy RAM is as a matched pair. I am aware that there are a lot of benefits of having pairs of RAM as opposed to two non-identical sticks and crossfire/SLI is much more versatile when it comes to non-identical brands/cards.

Would there be an advantage of having a *matched pair* of graphics cards, or would it be merely another gimmick to overcharge for?

With that generation of card you needed to have a special crossfire master card and a slave both attached via an external dongle. Now all ATi cards have crossfire chips and an internal crossfire bridge like SLI had all along.
