Hi guys quick qeustion....

290x Crossfire, MSI gaming 7, 3 Slots 16x,

Does it matter which slot they go in? EG slot 1 closest to CPU and slot 2?

Or can i do Slot 1 And slot 3?

Trying to make a gap between the 2x 290x Lightnings, Buying a new case due to overheating....

Much Appricated :D Stefan.

Depends on the cpu/motherboard

If both runs at 16x or 16x/8x then no

Use slot 1 a d slot3 then use gpu-z to check connected x* :)

On my motherboard I used to use slit 1 and 7

Thanks for the reply,

Motherboard is a MSI gaming 7 Z97 im sure it can...

Cant really test it lol, PSU in the way... HAF 922 case want to upgrade to a corsair 750d airflow,

On specs of the motherboard it says
"PCI-E Gen3 (16,0,0), (8,8,0), (8,4,4) "

Does this mean it should work? Thanks

Yeah you shouldn't worry about this :)

Connect them to 1-3. Both will work at 2x4 Pci-E, eating 8 of your CPU PCI lanes. (4690 has total 16).

And if your M2 is PCI-e eating already some of them, you aren't going to have full 8x8 benefits either. Not even 1x16.

Give some space between the cards and overclock them more :D
Enjoy the superior benefit of the Crossfire compared to SLI. No bridges to limit your performance or positioning :)

Hi,

So if i put 1 of my x290 lightnings in slot 1, and the other in slot 3.. it will still work but at reduced speeds? Will there be a noticible difference from 8x to 4x?

Thanks

The cards will work as max speeds. Their communication with the CPU will be bit slower. But you ain't going to see difference. Maybe 1-2 fps or few points compared to if you have 8x8.

Is your M2 drive PCI-e or Sata?

Just reading around people saying using slot 1 and 3 crossfire doesnt work... dont want to purchased a new case and find out slot 1 and 3 wont work :S

Only reason i want to use slot 1 and 3 having 2X 290x Lightnings with beefy coolers so close one without and space between the cards ontop goes to 85/90 degree's where the bottem one says nice and cool about 65/70

Are you sure?
The motherboard supports 3 way CF and only 2 way SLI.
Because NV dictates for SLI to work must be minimum 8/8. So slot 3 will never work for SLI.

AMD doesn't have such restrictions. And before you buy a new case, remove the motherboard, put it somewhere, plug the cards to 1-3 slots and see the results.

I bet it will work. Your manual also states which PCI-e combinations allow CF to work. But since the mobo supports 3 way CF you will be OK.

Yup :) it works, brought a new case, Temperatures are 71 top and 69 below :D running 8x , 4x, Cant tell a diff really.... 65fps BF4 Crossfire 130fps :)

Happy days!!!

I always wondered what 4x pci-e runs like in crossfire, i was tempted to go 3 way crossfire loads of times but was always put off by the 4x, i wish i had tried it now when i had my 7950s or my 290xs.
