crossfire x2 4890's .....

Cooling depends on the spacing of the cards on the motherboard.

If there's a decent gap between the cards then you should be OK as the top card will get some fresh air.

If the cards are right next to each other then the top card will be sucking in hot air from the card below. In that case blowing some cool air towards the top card will help.

thanks mate, a lot more straight forward than i imagined. I did think crossfiring i would be forking out for a number of additional fans for my case. Great news ;)

well when you say aqequate cooling my cpu and gpu isn't overheating, it's a compiled set up from overclockers themselves. Is there a particular quideline that should be followed, ie x1 120 mm fan per 10c or cpu core? Excuse my ignorance i am completely new to all this. Any advice is appreciated

As you're new to all this what is the rest of you system - motherboard, processor, RAM, operating system etc? I was assuming that your sytem will run crossfire 4890's but it's best to check.

As far as cooling is concerned some basic cases might only have one intake fan and no exhaust fan or vice versa.

As long as you have decent cool airflow into the case and decent exhaust for the hot air you'll be OK.

What type of case do you have?

If you have a pre-built system from Overclockers, and it's still available, post a link.

Gonna hijack this guys thread rather than creating a new one.

I have been thinking similar thing - whether to get another 4890 or maybe a 470.

I have a gigabye UD3 v1.6 mobo where I believe the slots are quite damn close

My case is an antec 902 with rear, top and front fans installed as standard.

1 HDD, 1 SSD and an i7 with an akasa nero CPU cooler on it. Also and Xonar DX sound card.

It was a pre-built MK1 Titan Goliath that I bought December '09.

So, would I need to buy an after market cooler for the top 4890 or would it be fine as is.

Atm my temps in single 4890 are: 38c idle (50% fan) and 68c full load (75% fan)

At the time I chose the 4890 because it was the most powerful available within my budget and thought I would xfire maybe later. Didn't think about mobo slots tbh which was my mistake.

So should I just change gfx card to something like 470 or maybe 6000 series ATi if they work out better price/performance-wise, or try xfiring 4890s?

Any thoughts would be good.

I would wait for ATI to release their new cards, I have 2 x 4890's and performance is better but not massively, also the heat is a problem and power consumption is very high.

Having looked at a few benchamrks over the past couple of months xfire 4890 is always in like the top 5 for gaming - I would have thought that would be a MASSIVE increase in performance. Obviously going from 100 to 180 FPS means nothing other than bragging rights and longevity but still....

Maybe I will just buy a new card all together then - be it a 470 or one of the 6000 cards. Time is on my side as my 4890 still eats up any game I play at 1920 x 1080.....

any other thoughts?
