Crossfire x8 instead of x16

I've recently changed my non reference 5850's for reference in order to watercool the full loop.

The old cards, running in a Crosshair III were both at x16 in crossfire.

Since installing the new cards, I read 1 at x16, 1 at x8 (meaning both operate at x8) in GPU-Z.

Both cards are x16 capable.

I've re-installed drivers, and scoured the BIOS in case there is anything there and can't see anything identifiable to change the speed.

Has anyone experienced this (am sure I've read somewhere but can't find via search) and can give me some pointers.

Thanks!

I had a similar problem a few years ago with my 5770's, made no difference that i could notice. Annoying as it is when you just want things to be as fast as they should but in reality the difference between x8 and x16 with those cards is negligible.

Search for "Linus 16x test" or something. 16x v 8x means about 200 points in Heaven. Not much. Better to go for airflow/room for watercooling over 1-5fps in games

perhaps it is just 'the principle'....... however...

If its just the case of a bios/CCC setting - I'd like to know and bump it up!

Have you tried re-seating the card in the slot and making sure the slot is clear of dust, fluff etc?

Also try swapping the cards around and see if the x8 speed moves with the card or stays with the particular slot.

Had this same issue with a new build - after much flashing of bios etc it turned out to be a fault on the motherboard - changed that and it got X16 on both
