i have an x850pro
do i get the £234 crossfire x850 and have 2 cards
or dont bother and get a x1900 512 in a month or so when they have dropped a bit i.e. sub £300 much sub
 
I personally wouldn't bother with crossfire on the X850 series. I don't think it really performed that well or was compatible with that many games. I'd just sell the X850 in a while and then buy the X1900 whenever you're ready, they're meant to be absolutely brilliant cards.

I'd sell your current card and put the money you get from that together with what you have now, you'll have enough for the X1900 XT now and maybe even the XT-X :)

That's my point :p If he's on that the limit of 1600x1200 and 60hz won't matter at all because the TFT will be limited to 1280x1024 anyways, plus the refresh rate on TFT's doesnt matter :p

Ah yes! I agree but who would buy x850 crossfire these days anyway.....

Go with the x1900:)
 
only legitimate reason I've seen for not recommending Crossfire on the X800 series is the 1600x1200 argument which let's face it is hardly gonna affect most people. Doubt that even 2 x800's are gonna be able to play much at that res without major framerate issues anyway.
Is crossfire really that bad? Has anyone actually got it and/or tried it? I thought the whole marketing point was that "it just works". Is this not the case? Do games actually have to be patched/profiled by ATi to work? What is the performance benefit generally?
As my x1800 is only around 25-33% faster than my old x850, wouldn't 2 x850's be quicker than one x1800?
 
as a side issue, I'm very much a believer that crossfire is very much a 'now' thing. If you want crossfire you buy two cards at the same time for ubber performance.

People who get one card in the hope they can get a second at a later date are kidding themselves.

Like you, you already have one card and people are telling you to sell it and get a new card from a higher product range. This is just the same with the x1900 series. If I were to buy a x1900xt now and then start saving for a second, by the time I'd saved enough money people are gonna tell me to sell the x1900xt and get a single card from the next series (whatever that'll be x2000xt?) I guess it also depends on how fast you can save money but if you can then you can probably be able to afford both at the same time (or stick it on a credit card :D )

anyway I'm rambling....get an x1900xt tho :cool:
 
You will get performance increase with crossfire on x850 but when you can sell your old x850 and get a x1900 for the money the x1900 be the better choice and will easily outperform the x850's in xfire. Generally sli and xfire is only good for the best cards currently available and as soon as the next generation card comes out that is normally better on its own against the previous generation in sli or xfire
