No you don't need a master card or dongle now, you can use 2x slave cards in crossfire as its done in the drivers now, since the CAT 6.11's in November i think.

EDIT: Yeah it was the 6.11's, taken from the release notes for them :-

New Features

This release of Catalyst® introduces software CrossFire™ support for any combination of Radeon® X1900 and X1950 installed in a system running either the Windows XP or Windows XP Professional x64 Edition operating system.

No master cards are required anymore.

Anybody checked to see if there is any performance difference between hardware dongle/cable and the new software mode?

I think that the inclusion of this in the drivers has messed up the crossfire mode detection a bit - occasionally on my master+normal with cable setup, I get screen flicker/corruption. A reboot cures it. Only seems to have started happening the last couple of months - about when I upgraded to 6.11...
