Hi

I am just wanting to check the type of network cable I need to buy, and also any recommendations for my network, I am wanting to stream media from my Synology to the HTPC...

Network consists of
Upstairs
Netgear 834N Router
Family PC
HTPC
Panasonic G15 (ethernet on the rear)

Downstairs
Netgear GS605 5-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch
Synology
Gaming PC

Upstairs
I have got the Faily PC connected to the router,
Cable running from the router to the switch
I need to run 2 more cables, one to the HTPC and then to the Panasonic TV
Do i need to use crossover cables ???

Downstairs
I have the Synology and gaming PC connected to the switch,

Thanks again

No, you do not need a crossover cable.

Most modern kit has auto mdi/mdi-x anyway so a crossover would probably work. Just get a patch cable though.

ok thanks for the quick reply

Does it matter if its cat 5 or should I go for cat 6

Will cat 6 help with the streaming aspect ...

Is this sort of Cabling also ok to go from my D-Link DSL-2640B to my Network Port in my mobo?

I need a new length as I'm moving into another bedroom and the current cable won't be long enough!
