Crouch 'funniest man in UK sport'

England footballer Peter Crouch has been named the funniest man in British sport, topping the poll of the best one liners and comedy football moments of all time.

The 6ft 7in striker won top billing for a cheeky response to the question "What would you be if you weren't a footballer?"

The Spurs targetman replied: "A virgin."

He cemented his position as the funniest man in British sport with 24% of a 2,000 strong poll voting for his debut performance of the famous "robot dance", while celebrating a goal against Hungary in a world cup friendly.

The wittiest commentators and interview lines, comical sporting gaffs and largest personalities were also uncovered in the new survey released on Thursday.

The study of 2,000 people was specially commissioned to mark the launch of Sky1 HD's new fast paced comedy panel show, A League of their Own, hosted by Bafta-winning Gavin and Stacey star James Cordon.

Respondents were asked a series of questions about past and present sporting individuals who have managed to entertain over the years and their thoughts on the amount of humour in the sporting industry, compared with past decades.

Celebrities are prone to comedy gaffs and the sporting industry is no different. John Motson takes the lead with 19% of the votes when he stated, "For those of you watching in black and white, Spurs are in the all-yellow strip."

Delia Smith comes in a close second with her infamous "let's be havin' you!" half-time rallying call at Carrow Road (18%).

At 31% Eddie the Eagle pips Usain Bolt (29%) to win the funniest Olympic moment of all time, with his heroic and hilarious ski jumping efforts in 1988. This is followed by the comedy moment when the Olympic torch went out and had to be re-lit by an official with his cigarette lighter at the 1976 Montreal Olympics (15%).

You've obviously never seen any of his interviews or behind the scenes stuff at Old Trafford. Anyhoo, that award wasn't about who was the best character in their sport.

I'd say Jimmy Bullard is up there with regards to being the funniest man in UK sport. Gordon Strachan too, some of his interviews are immense.
 
no but it makes a mockery of personality though doesnt it...they might as well have nominated a microwave dinner... everyone loves them, and they have been served by them well...

but its not going to make u laugh, or show personality on your plate is it?

Just curious what are you basing this on - a couple of Spurs game post-match interviews?, I think you mentioned somewhere you've met the lad too?. I had the priviledge of spending several hours with him, will be in a Mars advert with Crouch and the rest of my football team currently going to be aired on TV in April and he seemed like a thoroughly nice chap - very polite, friendly and not arrogant at all. I'd love to see you call him a **** to his face...
