I have a new pair of forks for my old dead ones. My bike is so cheap that it's hard to find replacements (straight steerer, 1, 1/8th, 9mm, 29in)

These new forks the race overhangs the crown. Ie. Its too wide. I've read this isn't an issue. But is it?

By the way I've never done this stuff before.

If the crown crown race is secure on the steerer tube, not loose or wobbly, is fully pressed down to the fork crown and matches your headtube and headset size then it shouldn't be a problem. Maybe post of picture?

I'll post a pic of the race on the tube (not fully down).

The bikes in bits but you'll see what I mean.

The red vertical is my attempt to show the extra width that would "overhang" the forks

Yeah thats what I thought you meant. That won't be a problem once its pressed down fully to the fork crown. The crown race just contacts the headset bearing. Once everything is installed and torqued up, providing there is no play you'll be good to go :)

Great. That's what I've been told and what I saw when I took the thing apart.

Looking forward to getting back out again.

Its going to be as tight getting it on as off.
Might take to the shop.

is the race all shiny beneath the gunk ... anything planned to try try and press it on with ?

Its not. It looks a bit corroded on the surface. The bearing is even worse.

Don't even know how you get new races especially with one as abnormal as this.

I'm new to all this, so don't have much to go on

While you have it apart it would be a good idea to replace those old race bearings with some new sealed bearings.

something like this should work but double check the dimensions with some vernier calipers if you have some to make sure they are the correct size.

bearings

They will come with a new split crown race which can just be pushed into position.

Oh and do not over tighten the top cap, finger tight then a quarter turn more that's it. Use plenty of grease around the bearings when installing.

I was going to suggest soaking race in some vinegar which should strip superficial rust - keep an eye on it, as can be fairly quick.
e: if it had been running fairly smooth could be salvageable with some new bb's

( I have one I need to take apart/maintain myself on a 25yr old bike, it doesn't have sealed bearings, and not sure I could get them, from earlier research,
must have done it 20 years ago with some lovely campag grease.)
