Guys im currently using an old 19" Packard Bell CRT monitor off a 98 PC. Just wanted to know if i would get any better quality GFX outta a TFT when paired with the ATi Radeon 9600XT 256MB. I know some of you may think its a dumb idea. But i dont wanna waste money ona TFT if this does the job.

to be frank, no not really

also, why do u have 2gig of ram and only a 9600xt? wuda been better to get 1 gig and a better gfx card, woulda made more difference

Some CRTs have wonderful pictures, some have awful pictures. Dunno how good your Packard Bell is.

If it's for gaming, I'm inclined to agree with MuSsEr, you'd be spending a lot on a new screen and still have a video card not capable of running modern games well. If your CRT has a nice picture, I'd keep it for now and get a new video card.

Not bad for free, but try running Oblivion on it :)

Anyway, back to the original question, your CRT does look a bit dark. Dunno if that's just the camera, or if the picture has faded a bit. CRTs do fade over the years. You'd certainly free up some desk space with a TFT and you could probably fit it in front of your keyboard rather than off to one side. They are definitely brighter and sharper, so in some respects you would get better graphics, but there's also drawbacks, like dodgy viewing angles (especially the cheaper TN panels), not as good black depth, and even the quickest ones still ghost a bit.

Also TFTs look blurry if you use them out of their native resolution, so having to run games in 1280*1024 may stress out your 9600XT even more.

Im running COD2 on 1280 x 1024 seems to make a strange noise when i load the game. But it works. When i have enough money ill get a 20" LCD. Any Suggestions?

Nout rong with my GFX card. Not a bad 1 for free. And i got the Ram beofre i decide what GFX card. It runs online games perfect, Play COD2 and BF2 with the GFX settings on full.

Here is the bad boy:

You sure it plays BF2 on full settings?
Coz my 6800gt struggles with full settings @ 1024 x 768...
theres no way your running bf2 @ 1280 x 1024 on full settings with a 9600xt.

You will have to upgrade your graphics if you get an lcd because you will need to run it at the screen's native res, 1280 x 1024 for a 19" model.

if you are happy with the GFX then get a monitor, a monitor just makes everything about your PC better and just generally a lot nicer to use than a big CRT balancing on the edge of a desk.

I agree with iamgud

That looks like your average standard CRT so you'll notice a huge boost in quality when you move to a TFT

It's very important to run a TFT in its native res in windows otherwise it will be blurry

This will be less pronounced in games however so you could probably get away with running games at a lower resolution

Im pos it runs COD2 and BF2 on full settings. Got good cooling.

Mines got blue leds so it runs bf2 at full settings and high fps!

When you say runs at full settings, is it playable?
I'm just curious as to how a 9600xt is performing on par with a 6800gt...

A crt will give you a better picture, theres no way that you will be able to run at native 1280x1024, most games your looking at 800x600 or 640x480 which would look horrifying on a tft monitor, crts have richer colours anyway.

Thats what i thought. BF2 gets a bit laggy when playing on a server with many players, but COD2 is fine. Ive changed the fan on the GFX card so its got better cooling and running at a higher speed.

I don't think that the games will look horrifying when played in a res different to the native res of the panel

Yes you won't get optimal quality but it'll still be more than playable.

You only really see the poor picture when in windows - you will of course always run the TFT in its native res in windows anyway

The static picture quality in its native res will be far better than the quality offered by your average cheap CRT.
