I have finally replaced my old 19" Ilyama CRT monitor :D . Now I don't know what to do with it. The reason I replaced it is because it had become blurry in the centre of the screen (and also because CRTs are so 1990s). What can I do with it now? Is it easy/Would it be cheap to repair? I'd rather not just take it to the tip. Anyone know of a better way to get use it/rid of it?

Drop it off something high, onto something hard, film it, post video.

Seriously, though, I doubt you'll be able to get it repaired, should look into a nice LCD.

As for disposal, take it to your local tip, stick it with the broken TVs and VCRs, etc.

Turn it into a hampster cage or something :D

Or a lamp. Could make for an interesting piece of furniture.

Best tip for disposal is to take it to the tip. They'll probably sell it on.

I remember skipping a 15" monitor a few years ago... within half an hour, it had mysteriously vanished!!!!

Failing that, chain it to a lampost, drainpipe or some railings!!!

I have already got a replacement, just bought a DELL 1907FP. The picture quality is awesome. Particularly like the ability to connect a laptop via VGA, whilst still having the desktop connected via DVI - and switch between the 2 at the push of a button. Oh, and the inbuilt 4 port usb hub is great too. No more fiddling under the desk to attach devices.

Drill a hole through it then chain it up to some railings. The local council will then remove it when they got round to it.

Eaiest way is to take it to your local tip. Throw it. If someone gets it, good luck to them to see if they can get it working.

If I remember rightly, the WEEE is retroactive, and puts a proportion of the responsibility for the safe disposal of hazardous electrical goods on all parties involved in making it and selling it to you...so in theory you should be able to take it back to where you got it for a legal disposal. That said, good luck! You'll get looked at like you're an idiot and told where to go...

Thinking about it, the WEEE isn't in force yet...supposedly from June 2006 although I think I may've glanced a newspaper article saying its been put back again. I'm a mechanical engineer, not legal...so I'm not following it 100% atm.

Hmm...I tried to list a broken 19" Iiyama Pro 450 on ebay - but nobody wanted it :(

I might have to invoke these services myself.

Are there any others out there?

Yeah and make a sale of £0.99, seriously though there nothing to be made selling your old 2nd hand CRT on such places. Unless its something like a Sony G420/G520 or better - where some people seem happy to pay upwards of £50 if mint condition. Image quality is still very good ones i mention and were top of the range 6 years ago, but then who wants a hulking great desk weight CRT anymore...
