Bare with me while i tell thee a Story of Woe and Low FPS.

My friend and I both have very similar rigs. His slightly CPU is faster, I have 2gb of Ram. Both using 7800GTXs with the latest Nvidia driver sets.

His monitor is a 19" TFT native res 1280x1024 fairly old, couple of yearsish
My monitor is a Beastly large 21" Eizo f77s CRT 100hz at 1280x1024.

We both play EVE online (space MMO very pretty visuals)

HE tells me that he has 90fps and i seem to only have 40 fps. in identicle situations.

heres the questions.1!1!1

-Do both of these monitor types report FPSs differently or is he actually seeing it that fast? The game would be godly with FPS that fast.

-I have turned off V sync and still only acheive approximatley half his FPS in all similar situations. Is there anything else i should check?

-We have compared settings in game and set AF and AA to identicle levels, overiding game settings and using application control. IS there some kind of default refresh rate built into DX9 that forces my monitor to max out at 60fps? I tried using powerstrip or coolbits to unlock the default refresh rate and all that happened was that i CTD a lot, admitidly i didnt test it thoroughly enougth, should i explore this??

-Should i ditch this CRT, as well as it has served me and consider moving widecreen TFT? what kind of money am i going to have to spend to get a similar sized widescreen model to this beauty that ive had for the past 5+ years?

Vsync aside - the monitor isn't going to have any impact on the framerate...

the only thing I can think of off the top of my head... assuming his CPU isn't dramatically faster than yours, and that the GPUs are similiar clock/performance... if hes running 1gig of dual channel with tight timings and your running 2gigs in single channel with crud timings then there is quite likely to be a significant performance difference.

Agreed, a game doesn't know or care whether it's a CRT or TFT you've got. The only things that are going to affect framerate which are monitor related are stuff like resolution and v-sync. If you're using the same resolution, both have v-sync off, and yet get dramatically different framerates, then you need to be looking elsewhere for your answers, like in-game graphics options, anti-aliasing options, and if none of that gives you an answer then you should run 3DMark06 on both systems to check your system isn't dramatically underperforming for some reason. You should also compare framerates for some other games.

Without the full specs of both systems is really hard to say what's going on, but for sure it's not down to your monitor. With v-sync off, the game engine is completely disregarding the refresh rate and pumping out frames as soon as they are rendered, so there's no way screen type can affect framerate with v-sync off. If anything it's TFTs which usually hit FPS because of the lower refresh rates, but that only applies with v-sync on.

vsync attempts to sync the FPS to the refresh rate of the monitor. Your monitor can do 100hz at 1600 x 1200, his LCD will only do 60hz at 1280 x 1024, if anybody's likely to have an FPS cap, its his if he turns vsync on as that will cap his fps to 60.

Look elsewhere for the cause, either hes running a much better rig than you in terms of CPU or memory bandwith. or your system is running really slow and you need a re-install.

Yeah thansk guys I could go into hardware detail but ill check it all out again. fairly confident my pc is well setup.

my memory is tight and on an a64 platform running on a 166 divider.
his is stock 200.

In other games, well only other game i play tbh is DOD:source HL2 engine, and FPS on that are both fairly similar and consistant...

ill keep tinkering

TY for your knowledge

RIght im getting the smae or Very similar FPS on resoloutions from 1024x786 to 1600x1200

All those give me approx 40-50 fps in game so I can rule out that the card is the limiting factor here?

Don't see anything obviously wrong there, would really need to see your mates spec to know if there's anything hardware-wise that would explain the difference. You're right that the game clearly isn't video card limited if it's running the same framerate in 1024*768 and 1600*1200.

Sure your mate doesn't have an X2 or something?

You could completely rule out the monitor as the cause by running your monitor at 1280*1024 @ 60 Hz. Just don't leave it like that cause it'll flicker like mad :)

It's well worth running some version of 3DMark too (preferably 05 or 06) and using the ORB to check your results are ok. Could try uninstalling video card drivers, using driver cleaner pro in safe mode to get rid of all nvidia files (ATI too if you've ever had an ATI card under that OS install), then reinstalling the drivers.
