Hey lads

I'm looking for recommendations on which CRT to buy. I've searched this section of the forum and didn't find much info. Monitors I've been looking at so far are the Dell p1100, p1130 and Compaq P1220. I know the two dell models are well received from users but not too sure about the compaq. I'm also looking for others to look for as naturally CRT monitors are hard to get hold of now.

Thanks :)

Sony FW900, probably the best CRT you can get and it's widescreen VERY tough to source saw one go on ebay for 150

Basically anything with a Sony Trinitron tube, or a NEC/Mitsubishi with a Diamondtron tube, or maybe a Lacie Electron Blue. Thinking of getting a used CRT myself after comparing Bioshock running on my Dell 2007WFP LCD to how it looks on my brothers 17" CRT. The sad thing is it looks a lot better on the CRT.

Thanks lads :)

Fish do you know of any specific models in the 20+ inch range? I've searched on google and I'm getting a lot of results for small monitors. I'm sure I'll find something though, just curious if you know any off the top off your head. Thanks again for that :)

Yea i hope there's a new tech soon the slim low power crt's.

Same mate. I'm quite surprised LCD monitors have taken off so much tbh.

LCD advantages over a CRT:

- It's slim
- It weighs less
- Consumes less power

CRT advantages over a LCD:

- Picture quality and general performance
- No input lag

Considering I will pay more for less and space isn't an issue, LCD monitors just aren't for me.

That's just my understanding from what I've been reading. In this instance, I'd be glad for someone to prove me wrong :)

They have their place i still want a widescreen lcd for movies
web browsing etc.
My current 19" crt consumes 130 watts average decent lcd is about 60 watts
so is it such a big deal?
I am sure there's a market for widescreen crts but they just don't make em.
Had my current iiyama vision master 1451 since about 2001.

Definitely a market for gamers, it just seems a lot of people aren't aware this older technology is superior performance wise (when you compare prices).

Don't use product search on google enter crt monitors and it's a pain i know
looking through all the sites but hey try that on product search and you will just get all the small screens.

Ebay seems the only place to go found plenty of sony and ibm 22"
as well as dell.Yet to see the fabled 24" widescreen sony though.

I agree, i think many younger people started their pc ownership straight into tft
so have no idea how much better crt is.

Still nice to have a dell 24" for movies and stuff, i was convinced for a while the 2007 wfp
dell was close to a crt but having heard a few posts up really put me off.

If somebody started making 24" widescreen crt's they would make a killing
i would pay £400 for one that's for sure.

It really is bizarre that a new technology that isn't as good ,
has replaced an old technology which is actually a lot better.
In a few years i am sure they will be on a par with crt though.
There is a new tech coming soon can't remember the name but i am sure
it will be silly prices though.
Plenty of ebay shops in uk with stock of 21" + crt's.

one of the best crt's i've ever used is the samsung 997mb!
My parents have one and the PQ is pretty poor compared to a good Trinitron/Diamondtron aperture grille screen.

Lol, I was about the post the same link :) I'm thinking about buying a 19" from there in a few weeks. Don't really know specific 22" models sniffy, but it's usually pretty easy to find what tube is in a monitor with google.

fish do you have a particular reason for specifying a NEC or Mitsubishi model using the Diamondtron tube? I've come across a 22" IIyama Vision Master Pro 513 using the diamondtron tube and wondering what you think?

iiyama made great crt's have one myself vision master 1451.
About 6 years ago i would say they were one of the best makes going
surprises me they are not these days in the lcd market.
Think i bought mine in 2001 so speaks for itself used every day for 6 years
"am a heavy downloader and gamer" and it's still perfectly fine.

Diamondtron and Trinitron just have a very good reputation that's all. I'm no expert though, it's just things I've heard. The only diamondtron screen I've owned was a Viewsonic P97f+SB which was a very nice monitor, and had the same NEC tube as the 930SB which is regarded as one of the best 19" screens. Most people say the Sony Trinitron tubes are even better though.

Iiyama used to be up there with NEC/Sony but from what I've heard their reputation took a bit of a hit with some faulty screens in their last few years as a CRT manufacturer.

You're forgetting some of the big pros and cons. The LCD's biggest advantage is that they look cool and high tech; the sort of technology you saw in sci-fi movies whilst growing-up. That's why they were adopted so quickly. Most computer users don't give a rat's *** about lag, color reproduction, etc. They just think that the new-tech LCDs are cool and only some sort of weirdo would want the old beige monster on the desk.

lol does make me laugh when people go on about space saving
and they don't use or need the space just a big void left on top of their desks.
That's not really an advantage when games look twice as good on a crt.

I was thinking the same thing the other day.. either you put the lcd screen where a CRT screen would be, and have a massive gap behind, or have a massive gap in front.

I've been using the same 17" CRT since 1998 ! for q2 and other (mostly fps) games. Only just now looking on ebay for the same type of 21"+ CRT as mentioned above. Lacie 22" would be nice. They need to be local-ish though, to collect them, as they are about 20kg :)
