CRT to LCD advice?

Hi all, I've been using a 22" Iiyama CRT and have (finally) got a short list of two LCD monitors I'm thinking about buying; the Dell 2407 or the Samsung 226BW.

I play a lot of games at 1600x1200 or 1280x1024 as that gives me both a decent fps frame rate and good detail. So I want to be able to carry on using both of those resolutions.

Does anyone know if the Dell and Samsung will automatically stretch these resolutions to fit their own aspect ratios or will I be left with black borders?

How do LCD displays cope with displaying resolutions not at their own native resolution?

TFTs run best in there standard resolution, running them in the same aspect ratio should work ok, but it varies monitor to monitor.

My old Hyundia scaled really badly, my Dell2407 scales quite nicely.

You should always want to run in native res though.

Hi, thanks for the reply. When you say the 2407 scales nicely does that mean it stretches any resolution automatically to fit its view area?

Well, 1600*1200 is 4:3, so you wouldn't want that stretched to fill a 16:10 screen. Anyway, I'm pretty sure the Dell will give you several options - either 1:1, aspect fill or fill. Dunno about the sammy, haven't read enough about it.

You shouldn't worry about using resolutions like 1280*800 and having them stretched to fill the screen, they do look fine for gaming. My 2007 is 1680*1050 but I run plenty of games in 1280*800 and it looks fine, just a touch 'soft'.

The Dell has a better panel than the Sammy (PVA versus TN+Film) so you get better viewing angles.

Ah.. it's starting to make sense. There's some pitfalls for us CRT "oldtimers" ;) I'm sure I'm asking the obvious but I've never had to think this through before as a CRT is happy to run at any resolution up to it's max.

Let's see if I've got this right! ;)

A 1920x1200 panel (like the Dell) will be ok displaying a 1680x1050 (the closest to my 1600x1200) resolution or any multiple of 16:10 but the display begins to look blurrier the lower the res you choose to run your graphics card at, is that right?

One another thing. Are there any drawbacks with the fixed 60Hz LCD refresh rate? (I'm running my CRT at 100Hz) Thanks for all the help so far! :D

Depends what size screen you want

22" get the Sammy
24" get the Dell, and iirc the Dell 2407 has 1:1 pixel mapping amongst some toys ;)

I am going for the Dell E228 becuase of the price differences otherwise i would have got the Dell 2407!

If you are serious about games and especially FPS games then think carefully about your decision. I have owned various Iiyama 22" monitors over the years, the last one being a VM Pro 513, and used to play a lot of fast paced FPS games, such as Half Life deathmatch. I now have a Dell 2007WFP and BenQ 24", both are superb monitors but just do not cut it when playing fast paced FPS's and so i always play them on the Iiyama. However for most games, even games such as MOH and Call of Duty they are excellent.
There will of course be people out there who say thats a load of rubbish but i doubt that they really understand and challenge them to prove otherwise.

Thanks, I'm grateful for your advice as you've hit the nail squarely on the head there as this is exactly what I was thinking of doing. The monitor I have is the Iiyama VM PRO 512 which I'm very happy with but they just don't make them any more.. :( so I was thinking along the lines of moth balling it and having my "daily" monitor as a good LCD. It's so tricky to decide which to go for without seeing them in the flesh.

I think a certain large purple PC store nearby to me may carry the samsung so I'm going there later on today to (hopefully) see it up and running. But I will of course be returning here to buy it from OC (as 99% of the stuff I've bought) if I like it!

What a complete waste of time that was... at least I now know how big a 22" wide screen looks like. (A bit smaller than I imagined) I'm starting to sway toward the 24" Dell. Decisions decisions!

Hey, thanks for that! :D
I see what you mean when you place them side by side. Are you happy with your new purchase??

so far! YES! :D

love the new res,

i tried to run 1600x1200 on a 17" CRT, couldnt read the text at all, far too small, but now, i can read everything and at a distance

havent tested any games yet though, took a while for my eyes to re-adjust to the new size, everything is so over to the right now lol i can view things without scrolling rleft/right now its unbelivable! far more on the screen Horizontaly and vertically.

Going back to your opening post.
i would get AT LEAST a 24" TFT WS, becuase otherwise you will be thinking, oh why did i buy a 22" its the same size pretty much!

how about a 30"

I think I'm going to go for the Dell. I'm not sure if my funds would stretch (or my deskspace) to a 30" Be nice though! lol
