Hey Guys, come to think of it how would you say monitor techonology has progressed aside from lower power and physical size?

if you think about it they've been playing catch up with crt?

crt - pros

Colours, refresh rates, 0ms response time.

Cons -

weight and power.

My crt goes up to 2048x by something.

Your thoughts? i'm buying a rog and have the 2411t but the crt hands down wins at 160hz esp for quake/csgo

i agree CRT owns LCD in every department except screen & physical size and geometry

as much as i loved my Diamondpro 930 i spent far to log trying to sort out the geometry

and the saddest thing of all is we have the tech to create a screen/panel that has them both beat
but stupid patents and manufacturers holding us back

just so they can milk every last $$$ out of current LCDs despite them being so poor
i dream of the day when you can buy a screen thats good for everything

:(

Weight, size, ugliness and expense are all negatives of CRTs that i'm happy to see the end off. They're better off in the past for 99% of PC users.

I can't see much of any reason to have a CRT these days. I'm a gamer and have a 144hz BenQ screen at 120hz and looking to get the ROG Swift 27" G-SYNC, more than adequate. I also work for a design consultancy and our design dept have Thunderbolt displays in the concept dept and Dell U displays in the technical dept and nobody misses CRTs.

People who have CRTs these days generally just come across "hipster-like" and still have a CRT to be different.

TBF there is still a reasonable use for CRT monitor/TVs and that is using retro consoles/other low res machines.

Other than that it's probably not really need, though I still have a Diamond Pro 22" at work as a 2nd monitor. Mainly cause it still works.

Can't wait to get my CRT back from the repair shop, using a Benq 'Gaming' monitor atm whilst waiting and it's most definitely a downgrade in quality. Size isn't an issue with CRTs for me, the positives far outweigh the negatives by a long way. Never really had a problem with geometry either, maybe tweak it a few times a year, no big issue. Gaming is light years ahead on CRTs also with black levels, playing games like Outlast, Thief, Bioshock, Far Cry 3, Eve or any game which is set at nighttime or has black in it is just so much more of a better experience on a CRT because of the black levels/CR.

I am looking forward though to the day I can play wide-screen games with inky dark blacks on a thin screen without blur, seems we are still many years away from that happening though.

Guess I'm a hipster lol, we still use a Panasonic CRT as the main TV in the living room, the flatpanels are all relegated to the bedrooms :o

What size is your CRT monitor out of interest? After reading this thread I'm tempted to get in the loft and dig out my old 19 inch Mitsubishi diamond pro 930SB :)

I hope it still works...

Mines a 19 inch Iiyama Vision Master Pro 454, getting it back tomorrow after 6 months wait for various parts and several co ck-ups.

My next door neighbour still uses a 12 year old 19 inch Mitsubishi Diamondtron also, not sure what model, 9 something I think, it's shadow mask whereas mine is a aperture grille.

So I got my old Mitsubishi 19" diamond pro 930sb CRT out and briefly set it up again. Didn't work at first, just blinking yellow power light so thought it was bust, but after swapping around connections to my second card and back again, that familiar old "chuthunk" sound of a CRT firing up happened!! It still works!

My findings after not using this beast for at least 7 years are that for text and desktop use current LCD screens win hands down. It's just all a bit blurry no matter what res I run at.
However, i then fired up a quick game to test, bioshock infinite for some reason, don't know why I chose that. Running at 1600 x 1200 res, 85hz and......................oh my god! The smoothness, clarity, contrast, ZERO motion blur, black levels and general image quality is just amazing. I had forgotten what CRTs were like.

I actually feel a tad confused now. It seems like technology has basically regressed.

If I could go out and buy a 27 inch widescreen CRT tomorrow, I would redesign my room, upgrade my desk accordingly and part with a **** load of cash!

I'm also wondering is the new asus rog swift the closest thing we have currently to CRTs? Let's face it, I'm not going to be able to get a big widescreen CRT and I can't really go back to a 19" 4:3 screen after gaming at 21:9 for the last year or so.
I wasn't really interested in the rog swift, but if the 'feel' and look can get close to a good CRT, I think I might have to.

change res to 1024x768 on fps games at 160hz people will call you hacker :D

How do you think I feel, my monitor in sig (probably best ever built) has a dying Flyback Controller, so focus is gone.

I am now on my older Mitsubishi 230SB (22").

Now considering I have had the Sony a long time gaming at 16:10 on a 24" (22.5" viewable) screen when most LCD users were on 17"-19" and a very few on 22"-24" I have had it good for a while.

Added to fact with modern GPU's I gamed at 1920x1200@100HZ or 2304x1440p@86HZ (attainable since GTX 580/680/780 series in most games) and never ever used V-Sync.

Zero lag, great colours, blacks and my geometry was perfect once adjusted.

no need to degauss every so often is a pro to LCD's imo

no 'native' resolution is a pro to CRT's

i did some work moving PC's, must say i never want to have to move a couple hundred 24" CRT's up two floors ever again though, they weigh a bloody ton!

I kinda wish I'd kept my Mitsubishi CRT (22" or 24", I can't remember now) as it was awesome, especially for UT, but the ROG Swift will do for now :D

My two Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 930SB died a few years ago. One was my first OCUK purchase back in 2004. :/

Still I think the ROG Swift is pretty close and has enough positives to counter what a CRT can deliver.

Actually you know what. After re designing my desk and monitor setup to incorporate the old CRT, and then trying out a few more games today.....it's not as amazing as I initially thought yesterday.

Without going into details tonight, I still very much prefer my dell 29 inch 21:9 superwide IPS overclocked to 75hz for gaming, and all round use, for many many reasons.

I'm contemplating the rog swift, but I'm not really sure it's worth it for me.
