CRT - Worth getting anymore???

Well said Ultra_Extreme. I've had high-end CRT's from the old days and the high-end LCD displays are just as good at colour reproduction, infinitely sharper, don't have geometry distortions, or power-supply regulation problems, or the host of other problems CRTs have. Biggest issues with CRT's, is the stupid amount of desk space taken up  Also they kick out x-rays

Yep ^^

Positives of CRT for OP would be:
higher refresh rate so plus 60 fps.
No ghosting
Better for gaming if REALLY serious about it but the average joe doesn't notice or care

Negatives:
Less sharp for web browsing, text edited etc.
Noticably higher energy consumtion
Eye strain
Weight/desk space
Not widescreen

Your question about what res your 8800 320mb can handle can't exactly be answered. It can do 1920x1200 for sure just not as well as the 640

A few more positives for CRT:

Superior black depth when used in a dark room
No lag
Resolution flexibility
Higher refresh rates so less tearing

if you do serious (IE moneymaking) graphics/photography, then a *good* CRT is the better choice....

You can pick up 22" LaCie Electron Blue's for under £200 delivered now... astonishing quality for the price...

*strokes Dual 22" LaCie's*

I have both, but for the "work" stuff, the Space Heaters are by far the beter option, i use a LCD for Surfing (Lappies and a Fujitsu Siemens 19" W)

you hit the nail right on the head, thats all the reasons why i still use a CRT for my main pc.

if you got the desk space, then go for a crt.

Oh dear if i keep making many more "pro-CRT" comments people will start getting me and C64 mixed up!

Its just a total no brainer for first person shooters. I've had the 226bw and ive seen the older 4:3 viewsonic 19" 2ms (highly rated) one aswell and on first person shooters both are nowhere near CRT for responsiveness. I'd go as far as saying the 226bw makes you just feel like your at a reasonable disadvantage (yet still the best fps gaming lcd imo), while non-overdriven 8bit panels like the dell 2407 make me wanna puke up using one! :p

I'd recommend saving a load of money and picking up a compaq P1220 second hand for approx £40, you can then play games crystal clear at 1280x1024@120hz with the gaming smoothness uncomparable to any TFT.

As said before, this is the real grey-area for LCD's, i'm a firm believer they are better at all other types of games than CRT but ..... FPS games + LCD =

Tell you what, at GT12 ill put "Garpy" (one of the worlds top HL players) against anyone, on a TFT, and ill bet he'd still destroy em. CRT/TFT makes no ******* difference, not to someone good. Its like "wear addidas predator, then you'll curl the ball well" "£$" off!

Only 1280x1024? I remember playing UT at that resolution! (Geforce 2 MX440)

Well, you could try and source out a Viewsonic P225f ;). 2048x1538 @ 79Hrtz baby!!!!! I bought it off my m8 for £85.

Call of Duty online woot!, old but I still find it a class game. Call of Duty 2 isn't bad either. You can't match FPS with TFT. My old CRT office reject 17" played any FPS title better than my m8's BenQ FP241W 24". I'm a fun but decent player and every pixel counts with no time for ghosting :). That's why I bought the CRT. I play quite a lot of games on my LCD still. Just not FPS titles.

I have a 21" Dell P1130 and a 21" IBM P275, they are GREAT for FPS! I myself am a gamer and the high hertz on these screen is great!

1600*1200 @ 100hz :)

also 1280*960 @ 120...

As I've seen a post before, the Sony FW900 24" looks very nice but they are pretty rareish and still very expensive if you ask me. Best bet if you are going to get a 21" is to go for a IBM C220(newest), IBM P275(oldest) or Dell P1130(2nd newest). There is also a P1240 from Mitsubishi or some other brand. Make sure it is at least 130Khz! The newer the screen the better id say because CRT's tend to get a bit fuzzy over the years in my experience. Ebay usually has some of these.

True, great skill will always beat unskilled or lessor skilled but your analogy does not stand for the following reasons.

1. I bet Garpy plays on a CRT and he wouldn't want to play on a TFT unless he was playing against a much lower player.

2. Take swimming. The best swimmers in the world wear one peice suits or shave off all their body hair cause that saves them 1/10 of a second over a race but that still doesn't mean any olympic swimmer couldn't swim faster than you even if they let their hair grow :p Or cycling, I bet a tour de france rider on my sister's bike could beat you on the owrkld's most expensive racing bike, etc, etc.

3. When you are player against similar skilled/talented people in any game or sport, than anything that will give you a slight edge/advantage you would be mad not to use it (so long as it's legal)

And I've fixed your posting as well. :p
