My memory has gone bad apparently so im in the process of RMA. I would like to know what a good replacment would be similar speed and spec and around the same price or a bit more (£180 ish) for 2 x 1GB sticks.

Im hoping they will give me a refund after reading 100's of posts about this happening. So i imagine a replacment will only do the same. But i would like 2 x 1GB sticks to replace the ballistix. Just need to know whats best to get

I seen that they ran out of 1GB sticks so most likely you will get 4 x 512 but if you can take an refund.... hope mines stay good i dont want 4 x 512

ill refuse 4 x 512mb anyway as it means i cant upgrade to 4 gig then. If its due to a product fault sureley they have to give an option of a refund ? And how can Crucial run out of 1gb sticks ?

They've stopped making them due to the failure rate.

How about these;

Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200C2PT TwinX (2x1GB) CAS2 (MY-079-CS)

They are rated to run in 4 slots for 4gig in the asus approved ram vendors list.

or these

Corsair 2GB DDR XMS4000PT TwinX (2x1GB) CAS3 (MY-094-CS)

Hello Brendan,

Thanks for your e-mail.

As far as we are aware, our PC4000 1GB Ballistix modules are not
faulty. We stand behind each of our products with a limited lifetime warranty
and 30-day compatibility guarantee. The decision to stop production on
the 1GB PC4000 Ballistix parts was made in order to come in line with
the rest of the market. At the moment, the memory industry is adopting
DDR2 as the new standard, which offers higher speed grades and lower
power consumption than DDR.
As you have purchased your modules from a 3rd party then we cannot
refund any money and you must contact Overclockers regarding any refunds as we are only in the position to exchange these modules on a like for like
basis.

We do still have PC4000 kits in 512MB densities however, and so please
call or e-mail in to place your order.

Guess that means ill have to buy a replacement or send back the 2 x 1gb modules in exchange for 4 x 512mb modules :(

Can anything else cause frequent crashes and "System Failed Memory Test" errors at POST. I havn't overclocked anything. If i can get my system to boot again for a reasonable amount of time whats the best way to check the memory to see if its got issues ?

Thats utter BS, these modules were killed off because their failure rate is through the roof, and 2Gb DDR kits are shifting off the shelves faster than any other kits I would have thought what with AMD being the platform of choice for most gamers. I don't see any other manufacturers ditching DDR1 currently.

i have a pair of these and i think mine are failing also

it all started about 2 weeks ago, my pc had been running fine for 3-4 months then while i was using photoshop it rebooted by itself (no blue screen or any warnings)
its done this a few times since (especially when using photoshop) and is becoming more regular, its also rebooting sometimes when just idle

i ran the dfi lanparty onboard memtest and had 68 failures, im gonna put it in my spare rig and test it there too, but it doesnt look good :(

send the stuff back to ocuk, they test it, it'sfaulty - you get equivalent value ram. I went with approved vendor model. No problems.

Hmmm I'm not so sure. . .unless you are sitting in overclockers storerooms with one of those clicky-counter things :)

Just look at these forums, the plethora of "Shall I move to 2gb?" threads shows that this is what we're buying at the moment.

OCUK swapped mine out for some Mushkin Extreme XP4000 black 2x1gb SEE THIS THREAD

OCUK would not let me have anything MORE expensive as a swap out even though I offered to pay any extra. So I had to have the same value or less so got these over the G.Skill as they are meant to be better.

My Ballistix died three times as well. Awful and amazing ram. Flew along with amazing clocks but what is that with unreliability. Their support is good, but only if you buy direct from them really. When you buy from a shop often they wont do replacements or full refunds but keep swapping it out for vlaue or 4x512mb ram when they keep going bad.

Sure I understand what you are saying, but these forums represent such a small percentage of overall computer users. If I was to guess I would say that about 11% of DDR kits sold are 2GB.

I don't know anyone with 2GB? not even myself :)
