I bought the latest copy of Linux Format earlier, #!CrunchBang was on the DVD. I have given it a go as a Live CD and TBH it is very impressive.

I am stunned by the responsiveness and speed; very, very fast.

I like it!

Just trying to decide whether to install it in place of Ubuntu...

Is crunchbang not just Ubuntu with Openbox as the WM?

If so - just install OpenBox on your existing install and use that instead of going for a re-install.

No, it's not. There are many distrobutions based on other distrobutions, which i generally find better than the one they're based on since they don't have to worry about the main coding and can concentrate on the front end, and making everything that little bit better.

The problem i'm having it choosing between #! and Mint... i love them both but they're really too similar to install both. Well, maybe not now i have a WD360 as a boot drive...

Yup, been Crunchbang for as long as I can remember now :). Love it.

Yep and me, got it running flawlessly both on my desktop and my Eee.

.walls., Crunchbang has a fair few different packages to Ubuntu, generally designed to make it much lighter weight.

It also means that you don't have to spend hours configuring your Openbox install :D

I'm running crunchbang on an sd card in my netbook, runs fine. The only problem seems to be that when I shut it down, it won't completely shut the netbook off. I have to hold the power button down for a couple of seconds

I had that problem and fixed it by downloading some scripts to update the shutdown menu, and add hibernate and suspend options.

Have a look here

Suspend and hibernate won't work unless you have a swap file, which I assume you won't do running off an SD card, but it fixed my shutdown problem.

Sure - but if it's ubuntu based, then you can "make" a crunchbang install out of ubuntu the same way you can "make" an ubuntu install from the debian installer (although not the same way that you can install Gentoo from a knoppix/whatever cd). If the extra packages are not in the ubuntu repositories, then you will be able to add the crunchbang repos as well and install them that way. If the init scripts are different... well... you should be able to get them from the crunchbang repos as well.

The point is, of course, completely moot as most people would probably go down the "reinstall" route. Personally, I'd be tempted to go down the other route though (I suppose I'm lazy in that way ;))

sounds good! I'm sure the hard disk needs replacing tho.

anyone know how to start it installing in text mode?
