PDX announced that who ever downloads Crusader Kings 2 on Steam from today and for limited times, keeps the game forever.

Personally is not only a great Grand Strategy game but a fantastic RPG also. (actually is a Grand Strategy Dynasty simulator game)
Contrary to the other similar games like EU4 and HOI IV which you govern a faceless country.

And anyone who buys it, after you do the tutorial, and possible the necessary game in Ireland to get the grips with the mechanics, try to play as a simple vassal count in Europe or if you want very hard mode in Byzantium. They are the most enjoying trying to usurp titles under the watchful eyes of kings and emperors.....

While vanilla game is always updated with the new patch mechanics, if you like the game the "must" DLCs are

(sorted by importance)
Way of Life, Old Gods, Sons of Abraham.

After that Reaper's Due adds a lot of super natural stuff, but not to everyone's liking.
Monks and Mystics adds secret societies (grand master satan worshiper events for the laughs).

there is always some place that sell them with 75% discount within month of previous offer.....

Beware. Is very addictive game, and you might even experience emotions. Especially when you control a ruler from when he was a child, having avoided all the plots to die before comes to age, living a good saintly life for 40 years having expand it's realm, and dying horribly piece by piece at the hands of some incompetent witchdoctors

(which ofc you can always throw them to the cell and execute them....)

And if everyone buys to play as patrician with the Republics DLC, be ready for big family bloodbaths.....
(for not the weak or those who might be offended easily and don't go to BBC complaining about cruelty.....).

Is the base game fine without any DLC at all?
Sure. The game is addictive as a sin regardless.

Always basic mechanics are updated. For example initially the retinues were inside a DLC but after couple of patches are free for everyone.
Same applies to many things over time.
