Crysis 5k car explosions

They will use some kind of avidemo command were it takes 30 screen shots a second and then stick them together in vdub or Vegas and it looks perfectly smooth when played back.

If you look very closely I think you can see a single figure framerate (often 2-3fps) so it probably took about a halfhour to render that :D

there was a similar vid a while back but with boxes, i think the guy disables some command in the config file or something along them lines

Indeedy. Basically, rather than rendering a scene as fast as possible, the engine explicitly waits for each physics frame to be computed before drawing the image. The result is smooth animation but at an unplayable framerate.

The frames are rendered (not in realtime) by the engine and then put together to make a video. Hence it looks perfectly smooth.

You can be sure that it will be at least another 3 years or so till something like that is possible in realtime, lol.

Didn't they use similar techniques in half life 2 episode 2? Where they rendered the cinematic physics seperatly and just overlayed it above the actualy game whilst you play? Is a nice get around of the problem i guess.
