Crysis 64 bit on Steam - How To

Hi all,

I couldn't find that this had been posted before but there is a work around that allows you to play Crysis, via steam, in 64bit, here is how.

1. Download the 64bit version of the folder from here - http://www.cleanourseas.org/other/crysis1.2.1.Bin64.rar

2. Extract this folder into your Crysis folder, C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common

3. Rename "Bin32" to something else, mine is "Bin32Orig", rename the extracted folder from "Bin64" to "Bin32"

4. Launch Game!

Heres a few screenshots which show it is actually running in 64bit mode.

Notice Crysis64 doesn't have the *32 extension.

The benchmarking tool believes it's trying to open the 32bit version due to the folder name change.

But quite clearly shows it's running in 64bit when actually running the benchmark, uber blurry screenshot!

My 64bit seems to run smoother though, strange, maybe the min FPS is higher rather then the average FPS in 64bit. Looking at your screenshots though, why wouldn't you want to run 64bit!?
 
Just ran the benchmarking tool on both 64bit and 32bit versions, everything set to very high with 16xQ Antialiasing at 1680x1050.

64bit
Max Mem usage: 1101mb
Min FPS: 23.70
Max FPS: 39.61
AVG FPS: 32.66

32bit
Max Mem usage: 918mb
Min FPS: 27.16
Max FPS: 39.43
AVG FPS: 33.07

Very little in it in terms of FPS but the 64bit used a whole 182mb more ram, this must be for the higher quality textures.

The FPS difference is minimal, as noted before, with it only being faster by an average 0.41 FPS on 32bit compared to 64bit, I'm not going to miss .41 FPS so I'm sticking to 64bit for the better visuals.

System specs for reference are,

i7 920 @ 3.6ghz
6gb OCZ Gold @ 800mhz
5850 @ 900 / 1150
Win 7 HP 64bit

Might be mistaken but i think its the built in crysis benchmarking tool?

No it's not - this screenshot of a dialog with all the settings set to Very High is something else:

But your minimum fps has dropped by 3.5 fps. While I do usually run 64-bit where possible, in this case there is no real difference in average and max frame rates, but what is probably a fairly noticable drop in the minimum, I'd rather stick with the 32-bit exe.
I don't see how the 64-bit version would make the game look any better or worse, sure, it allows larger address spacing, meaning it can use more ram, but in Crysis' case, its not the ram that's an issue.

64-Bit software will also perform better with higher precision FP operations on the CPU. It's not just about RAM. I would guess that in the case of Crysis the potential CPU based gains are nullified by Graphics Card limitations, so it ends up being a rather bad example..
 
So does the 64bit version use higher detail textures and look better or not?

I dont believe so no. But any cpu based tasks (such as physics processing) should run better so in that regard it should 'look' better.


When Far Cry was patched with the 64-bit exec, it did come with the higher detail textures and such.

Nice, i stand corrected there then. Whether that's a different texture or a higher detail mapping, 64-bit does seem to have the greater visual quality :)

but your only going notice the difference if you take some screenshots and zoom in..
