Ok first of let me just say, now that I have a powerful machine (980x 580 SLI and such) I see what the big deal is now in terms of graphics and also just how much of game there was undernief it all.. VERY fun to play, HOWEVER... I still don't see why it took up untill this point, the 6970s and 580s, to beable to run Crysis at 60FPS with AA and very high settings (Me I am using that utlra high config, looks beast). The grapics are superb but there nothing I havn't seen before and arguebly have seen better. For E.G games like BC2, or Just cause 2.. Granted maybe texture wise these two titles are a little bit behind, but any computer within the last 3 years could max these babies out, and they look stunning. Arkham being another one, and heck even UT3 looked damn impressive and thats 2-3 yearas old now.

So why the difficult time with Crysis? Whats it doing that warrents such HIGH system requirements and why does it take 2x580 SLI to run this at more or less consistant 60+fps in 1920x1080 on very high settings with 4-8xAA? I just don't see where the hardware is being strained, it looks pretty but what game doesn't these days.. and what games can't we run these days at 100+fps. Dirt 2, NFS Shift, all games that look mindblowing and older and newer systems can max them just fine : )

As niggyg said, it's not necessarily WHAT Crysis achieved, it's more WHEN it achieved it that was the impressive feat.

that was the point, they made it with future cards in mind to increase the replay value

Play it on release on Medium
Play it a year later on High at a decent res
Play it 3 years after release on Max at high res

I was really impressed with Crysis, it was the first game I'd ever encountered that really pushed beyond the capability of graphics cards at that time and delivered superb visuals.

OP, the config you're using improves framerates and visuals too. Your framerates will probably drop if you put all settings to vanilla

I think that the reason crysis is so much more stressing than other games is for a variety of reasons. I think that they pretty much just banged everything in there that they could. There's loads of physics in the game, environment physics, light physics, water physics, particle physics etc. There's quite a big map to explore too. There's tonnes of different textures in the game. There's pretty intelligent AI. There's loads of vegetation. Great shadows. Tinkering with the configs can get you depth of field, you can have a huge lod etc etc. It just put loads of visual effects that were available at the time into one game.

I was more impressed with Metro 2033 to be honest... and I too was impressed with Batman Arkham on the PC.

Another game that still impresses me is Half Life 2... If you install Cinemod 10 then it really is impressive for its age.

Crysis ran like a dog on my old rig, it now runs fine on my new rig but its still not fantastic and the game was ‘very’ much a mediocre experience and boring IMO.

There have been, and has been IMO much better games to showcase off the PC that combine both graphical and gameplay prowess. Crysis does look nice don’t get me wrong… But the woeful performance even on some of the rigs for today made me think it was all looks, nothing more..!!

I know quite a few did enjoy the gameplay, and quite a few looking forward to Crysis 2 - from the looks of it a much toned down console port... Makes you wonder if Crysis being so cutting edge hurt sales..

I've bound to have opened that 'big' can of warms... Oops. I'll duck..!!

lol INCOMING...!!!!

I do agree though, I mean it was a bit to 'cutting edge' for its time, I feel that the game could have been optmized a bit more and still have it look fantastic. Again you just have to take a look at games like Batman and Half life 2, both games that look(ed) fantastic for their time but were optimized so well that a lot of systems could handle it and still have it look insanely impressive.

what gets me is the same people complaining bout this game will complain about console ports, make ur minds up lads, I say bring on more games like this that need some graphical muscle
