Crysis Stuttering... What the Hell?

No matter what I do I just can't get decent playable performance from this game. I had everything on high with motion blur off, 4xAA, 2048 x 1152 res, getting between 25-45fps according to FRAPS, fair enough, but the stutter... what's with the stutter? There are constant pauses whilst playing. Nothing major, but enough to be more than a little noticeable and affect gameplay.

I turned all the settings to low just to experiment... got between 40-60fps but still the stutter. It makes absolutely no sense at all. I max Metro 2033 with very playable framerates throughout and no stutter at all, but then I get this stuttering problem with Fallout NV and Cryostasis as well (and minecraft, as stupid as it sounds). I downloaded Crysis on Steam today thinking it might be an issue with the (unpatched) retail copy, but apparently not. Same problem with Warhead too.

Any ideas what could be causing it? I'm fresh out of ideas and pretty fed up after shelling out so much on a GPU :(. Only thing I can think of is my CPU being on its way out, but I don't know whether these things show those kinds of signs of degradation or just stop working altogether... it's certainly been put through its paces over the years...

I know I had issues with lack of RAM in the last couple scenes. Even with 4gb, had to run in 32 bit to get around it. See what your CPU usage is like though, it's certainly getting on a bit

Speaking of stuttering, well not so much stuttering as the final level being an unplayable mess. Anyone else encountered/solved this issue?

Could be a VRAM issue at that res with 4xAA. Stuttering is often indicative of such an issue and considering your resolution is slightly higher than 1920x1200, you may not be able to get away with both high textures and 4xAA.

I'd recommend using MSI Afterburner or something to monitor your VRAM usage in game. That card has only 1.25GB so it could be the issue. If you're hitting 1.2GB then lower the AA IMO.

Yeah, I ran it in 32bit mode and it was perfect. Running in 64bit made it pause and crash horribly. Not sure which version Steam one is, but disc version has both. I narrowed it down to RAM usage being maxxed out on the last level, hence why I tried running in 32bit to stop it from using all of my RAM

I have 12gb of RAM so I hope it's not that, problem was present with my 5970 and now remains with a 6990. Will give 32bit mode a try though :).
