I've been playing around for a few weeks now with Windows 7, playing games and generally getting to know it a bit. I've played through Warhead and am getting stuck into Farcry 2 but I wondered if there was any increase in performance from 7 over vista, if at all. I benchmarked using the Framebuffer Warhead bench tool and used the following settings:

> custom mode (gamer except for shaders set to enthusiast as this is what I play with)
> 1650 x 1080
> no aa
> Ambush Flythrough
> 0 (default) time of day
> 3 loops

My system specs are in my sig. I'd heard good things about windows 7 for gaming prior to trying this. I was a little surprised by the results:

MIN MAX AV
Vista 17.14 39.14 28.21
Windows 7 12.53 28.23 21.29

I was expecting it to be considerably closer but them I suppose Its early days for windows 7 beta and this is only one game. However much I like using 7 I might stick to vista for gaming for a while.

What's the spec of the PC you're using?

I know Windows 7 is still beta but like you I'd have expected there to be much less in it, shame we can't see it compared to XP or even one of the server OS's like Server 2008.

For some reason my sig isn't showing up!! Heres my system specs:
Q6600 @ 3.2 - 4GB PC2-8000 Reaper
XFX 8800 Ultra - Abit IP-35 pro -
Oryxx Titan 800w PSU - Samsung 250GB HDD
Vista 64/Windows 7

To be honest, I even though there might be some improvement as I'd read in some benchmarks 7 even offered an increase in framerate, especially DX10 games.

Hey,
I don't know about Windows 7, but I am running it on my Vista 64bits, it is amazing, I didn't turn on AA cause I find it no need to.
I trust it is my 4870 which is pulling out its horsepower, the game runs smoothly at around 35~36 FPS, I am very happy about it.
Before I paid for the box, I thought my rig may not be up to the challenge, as there are too many reviews out there saying that only a high-end PC can run it.

Now I am very happy.

a 4870 is high end. whilst it's not the fastest card on the market, it's not exactly something you'd find in your office PC, crunchin' excel sheets.

Most of my games run pretty similarly on 7 to Vista, but I haven't tried Warhead.

Maybe this is more of a driver issue; are you using the same drivers on both?

I'm using 181.2 on both vista and windows 7 so there shouldn't be. Unless there's a problem with 181.2 and windows 7. I'll test it out on some other games and see how they fair

I've seen a few as well which is why I was a bit surprised with the results. It may just be something to do with my system or just warhead. I'll see what I can rustle up with X3 or clear sky

I'd imagine it's simply down to drivers. NVidia and ATI have just released there first driver and it's pretty much a beta. Coupled with the rest of your hardware it's going to be a few months before they really sort out the frame rates, etc.

Try it again when the Windows 7 RC comes out. Hopefully there will be updated drivers then.

Its much closer in stalker clear sky. Ran it using GSC's benchmark tool with the 'rate benchmark' option which I fairly confident runs in DX10 enhanced full dynamic lighting, 1650 x 1050 and all High settings. it runs 4 benchmarks with different times of day and the like so I've just averaged them all.

Vista > MIN 20.2 - MAX 66.2 - AV 37.7
Win7 > MIN 19.2 - MAX 62.8 - AV 35.6

Only a couple of frames in it this time which is much more like what I was expecting when I first though about doing this. I'm sure the win7 drivers will mature with age and hopefully surpass vista on release.
