people need to understand FTP is where gaming is going.

only product ip crytek has that people are interested ijn is crysis rest is ****

you dont need millions to work that out but they seem to :p

I think anyone into PC gaming can see that, the problem is most of us don't want it. FTP models are 99% terrible.

well I am glad some people agree with me, look what the F2P model did to the newest command and conquer. They stopped it before it was finished because it was **** I can vouch for that but it was only a beta stage when they gave up on it.

yes we dont want it but most people wont go against the grain and try and stop it. so the companies just plough on do what they want.

I don't think that's true, a lot of us won't spend a penny on FTP in game items. The issue is those that do, end up spending way more than a game usually sells for.

EA are the masters of it though, millions buy their games, then many spend further money on in game stuff like dlc or fifa packs. If I recall correctly they make more from the sales of fifa points than they do from the game itself.

The only FTP game I spend money on is Planetside 2 for the membership, I think it warrants the money though as it's a brilliant game and not some half hearted attempt to pull kids in and buy hats etc etc.

It depends on the free to play model and the game. I'm saving a shed load of cash playing Rift, Aion, Tera, World of Tanks and Marvel Heroes.

They all give the gamer the option to pay for perks/quality of life (none pay to win). Make a good game and people will give you cash.

Add to this list, Path of Exile. FTP done right.

That interview seems okay to me? Just giving blunt responses to questions he really shouldn't need to answer from a journalist.

As for the whole F2P argument the most successful games on PC at the moment are either F2P or have a very health F2P style monetisation. That is what Game developers are saying when F2P is starting to take over the market, to make money on a AAA investment you have to provide a service to make sales last longer than 1 month. On top of that as games fall in price within a few weeks of launch (unless that one of the massively popular games) developers need to try make that money back from somewhere which is why you see a lot more micro transactions. Most people aren't paying the £30-40 entry fee but more like £10 so that £20 has to be found from somewhere.

I think full retail price games can be sucessful as well but the market for people willing to pay full price is shrinking drastically.

Well from my perspective I loathe all these shiny, bright and colourful MMOs that are churned out these days. If someone were to make a dark fantasy or decent sci-fi MMO then I would happily pay a subscription every month if the game was good. I think there are an awful lot of people out there like me who would pay a subscription and the box price for a good sandbox game.

The question may well is F2P thriving because the games that are being made appeal to a F2P audience. There is no reason that another model could work for another gaming niche. These are the publishers who said space sims were not worth making a few years back.

The whole "games as a service" thing sounds like so much marketing BS.

Games aren't like an OS, or a product like Photoshop, where a service model might make sense (Adobe have just made the switch, MS might do so soon).

Esp single player games. How could you ever make a game with a story - a beginning and an end - into a service?

So I'm guessing Crytek is pinning its bets on 100% multiplayer games like CS:GO or Team Fortress, and somehow thinks people will pay either a sub or make lots of in-game purchases.

I think that will only alienate a large % of gamers, who aren't interested.

It's the same mentality of all MMO developers trying to copy WoW. Instead of creating their own fanbase, they all want to copy WoW and take some of their fanbase.

Where has the creativity gone?

It's all about the Benjamins :(

No one is saying good devs shouldn't make money. I would question if everybody jumping on the same bandwagon will prove to be a smart move.

Different companies can be successful with different business models. But Crytek seem to think everything will go FTP. I really hope he's wrong.

hes not wrong many companys in the driving seat in gaming are.

ftp is here to stay and grow .

Can someone explain how story-based single player games can be made into "a service" then?

Sure if everyone wants to make the next Farmville or Candy Crush Saga and pile on the micro-transactions. But how could Half Life or Crysis ever be released under that model?

Are they just going to release new CoD-type MP-only games each year and nothing else?

I just don't see how FTP/software-as-service can be applied to the majority of single player games.

"You have reached the Black Castle of Misery, the guards demand £5 to enter. Yes/No"

I for one have yet to find an F2P game that I'd even consider spending money on tbh, probably never will.

In regards to delayed pay checks

Some people were very impatient and got angry at the smallest delay.

Some people have lives, families and houses to pay for. Easy to say that when you're racking in millions.

It annoys me that they wont admit that moving to consoles and poor decision making is what killed them. No doubt with this idiot behind the wheel they wont be around for much longer. Damn shame
