Just downloaded CS. Been trying to play online and getting the error "Could not contact server".

Firewall is setup fine
Tried it with firewall off, same error
Correct router ports are forwarded
Game cache is fine

The server list loads all fine and dandy. I just can't connect.
Steam is working fine so I'm lost.

Ideas?

Cheers,
Ash

Steam will remember what you own wherever you log onto your account with.

Is this CS 1.6 or CS:S we're talking about here?

Either way, right click on the game, select uninstall. Then, go into your steam\steamapps\accountname\ folder and remove any counter-strike folder that may exist there, or just back it up somewhere if you have maps / configs you want to keep.

Then restart Steam, and start downloading it again.

What router do you have?

My WRT54G wouldnt connect to any server, when I'd click one the ping would jump from 20 to 1200!

A firmware upgrade fixed it :)

Have a go at perhaps:

Playing without firewall enabled
Connecting PC directly to router

Is this CS 1.6 or CS:S?
If 1.6, can you connect to Half-Life Dethmatch / Day of Defeat / TFC servers okay?
If CS:S, can you connect to Half-Life 2: Deathmatch servers / Day of Defeat: Source servers etc?

Running any IP blocking software such as Protowall/Peerguardian 2? That always caused me a lot of problems with steam and the games.

It's CS 1.6.
Updated my router firmware.
Only have windows firewall. What should be the exceptions listed for the game? I have 'steam' and 'half life launcher' x 2 (one is condition zero).

This is really annoying me now. I'll try going straight through the modem now. Prat about like :(

Windows firewall could probably be your problem, try disabling it and connecting to a server, see if that helps. If it doesn't, re-enable it quickly.
