Alright guys. I always seem to have this problem with CS: Source. I have an ifra-red wireless keyboard/mouse (Microsoft) which work perfectly in windows. There is absolutely no lag whatsoever and they're extremely responsive.

However in CS it feels like I'm on an ice-skating rink. There seems to be a delay when I press any of the movement keys and it just feels like I'm sliding about everywhere.

Any idea what's wrong with it?

SP2 installed but not hearing any trippy sounds. Everybody who's ever played on my PC notices it as well!

Rest of system is Opteron 146 @ 2.8ghz, X800XT grahics, 1GB ram.

Very confused!

Sometimes upon joining a server your ping can be almost double or even treble its normal and as the seconds tick by it gradually decreases to the norm. Also try what Andy says and keep an eye bottom right hand corner and see how it goes.

You know I had a really similar problem to this a while back. It just kinda disappeared after a while. Sometimes the keys wouldn't even register, and then other times you would get that skating feeling you described. I wish I could think of something I did, but it just seemed to fix itself :\

Check in your task manager for a process called type32.exe
If it is there, try closeing it before you play to see if that helps, I had similar problems when that was running. I believe it is part of the keyboard drivers that works the extra buttons on most ms keyboards (like short cuts to media folders and email etc).

What's your spec (including sound)? My old computer had this issue in source and ut2k4. There are so many things which it may or may not have been. Try running with -nosound in the launch options and see if it still happens - again I'm not even sure if that does suggest it's the soundcard that the problem, but it might be.

Also try disabling the windows indexing service.. that seemed to clear up some of my issues but not all.

Try setting your heapsize to half of your ram size in the launch options. If you have 1GB of ram set it to 512MB using -heapsize 512000

Just some suggestions. I spent a couple of years just trying to tweak things so it worked, by the end the problem had become much better.

It's a steam/valve thing. Thousands have reported the same symptoms. Go check the steampowered forums.

Theres no definitive answer for why it happens or how to fix it and it doesn't appear that valve are about to try to fix it this side of the end of time.

You can try...

Setting HL.exe prority lower

Recording a demo as you play

for ATI cards, removing the ATIXXX.exe file.

None are guarenteed to work but some have reported that 1 or more of these measures have cured the lag problem. None have worked for me but it isn't so bad as it was.

If you have netgraph enabled you may also notice that your framerate drops at the same time as the lag.

One thing that screws around with my wireless keyboard (and mouse) is if i have my mobile phone too close. Perhaps its something as simple as that?
