Its probably cable break.

Basically it is a design flaw with all of the MX5xx mice because there is no reinforcement where the cable goes into the mouse. The culprit will likely be where the cable goes into the mouse body, there will probably be a break in the cable inside the plastic wire. I have heard of people repairing them, but I have no idea how. I keep meaning to look at mine, cos I kept them. Haven't got around to it yet though

10 years is a long time....to be fair 10 years of use makes it a cheap tool. I bought my first mx518 about 8 years ago, bought another 4 years later, just because the other one was dirty and grubby. Both still work. Great mice.
