Hi,

I've recently started playing CS:S again, but I'm experiencing quite a lot of crashes, and I can't figure out what's causing this to happen.

Basically I join a server and I can play anywhere between 2 to 10 minutes then it freezes up with a looping sound and I have to press ctrl/alt/delete to get back to my desktop, where I find a message saying hl2.exe has stopped working.

It doesn't happen all the time, but it is pretty frequent.

Also another thing that does happen a lot is when I first join a server, I get this annoying "warning: connection problem" in red writing at the top right hand side of the screen after about 10 seconds of joining a match, but if I disconnect from that server and join another one the game will work fine.

The system I'm using consists of:

i7 920 D0 (i have it o/ced, but I've tried running at stock and the same thing happens)
Gigabyte EX58 UD5
6GB Corsair Dominator
Asus 8800GTX 768MB

I thought it was maybe the graphics drivers that was causing it to happen, but I tried updating to the latest ones and the problem still persists, it actually seems to have gotten worse tbh.

I've tried 195.62 and 196.21's so far, I don't suppose anyone knows of an older set of drivers that I could try instead incase it is a problem with these newer ones?

Thanks in advance

I don't have any special launch options set, and I've tried reinstalling it to.

Also the only config I have is my buy one, but it was doing this before I started using that.

Everytime I quit the game to I get the same App crash message as well saying that the app has stopped responding.

I'm at a loss as to what is causing this, I'm now using 181.71 driver, and it no longer seems to be locking up, but I still get the error upon quiting the game, and I also get the annoying connection error when I try connecting to a server for the first time as well.

I tried deleting ClientRegistry.blob, SteamUI.dll, and Steam.dll as I read somewhere that this might help the connection problem error I get, but it hasn't made any difference whatsoever.

Nope, I'm with BT mate.

I'll give that DX8 launch option a try and see if that makes any difference.

Thanks

i had this kind of problem but im with BE.....problem was with the router thompson 780w or something like that...the fix was on their forums which worked for me.

maybe you should try googling your router model with the words css.....see if anybody else has the same problem.

Yeah, I am using the BT Homehub (the black one), and I was beginning to think that was the cause of the connection problem.

Since using the older nVidia drivers the crashing has stopped, so the only thing that's bugging me now is the loss of connection on the first server I attempt to join.

Once I disconnect from that and try another one it usually works fine, but it's still really annoying.

4Play, do you know if there is a fix for this?

Or could you guys suggest another modem/router that I could replace the homehub with that will stop this from happening?

Thanks again for your help it's much appreciated :)

Known to be a BT home hub problem, most people just bought a netgear iirc.

There'll be plenty in google about it.

Yeh i did figure out a solution but im not 100% sure if it will work for you. Basically despite having all of the ports forwarded I had to manually forward the ports for CSS. If you look on steam help section there are the ports that you need to forward.

A second solution is if you can access telnet and completly dissable the ports. This was an old solution with an older version of the home hub. Not so sure if this will work but worth a try.

I think I'll just go and buy another router tbh, I've always thought this Homehub was hopeless, and the wireless phone that came with it is spazzing out constantly to, so it's going to find itself a new home in my wheeliebin!

Thanks again guys.

Well, I think I've sorted this problem out finally.

I didn't have Steam Games enabled in the Application Sharing section of the Homehub configuration!!

Since enabling this I haven't had any connection problems at all, and the hl2.exe has stopped working error when quiting the game seems to only happen if I don't disconnect from the server first, if I disconnect and then quit the game the error no longer happens on exiting.

Yeh when I did that it did not stop the problem for me. I had to manually forward a certain port range. Its not difficult but seriously consider buying a better router in time because frankly there s***.
