CS:S won't always load

Game has been strange since the last update about a week ago(?) Opening it from either the desktop shortcut, steam, or through xfire will 9 times out of 10 make the hl2.exe process run but nothing else happen on screen. I have to end the process and try again. Eventually, if the game loads it will almost always become "not responding" at the "retrieving server information" stage. When the game has started and connected it is usually ok, however it will often crash at retrieving server info on the next map.

Running xp 64, nvidia 7800gt, opty 165, dfi expert, gskill 2gb. Deleted the game and reinstalled with no luck. Verified fine.

Edit: same problem with DOD:S, possibly hl2 files borked?

Ive got the same problem mate, just started happening yesterday tho! i can get in through x-fire sometimes tho!

I havent, i think valve know about it tho. As there are a lot of people with this problem!

when my xfire got updated the other day, things got screwed up, things not loading etc. was ok after a reboot tho :/

Going to have to wait then as it sounds like it's not my machine which is the problem. Annoying.

On the plus side it's given me time to play FF7. Woot!

Yeh it is extrememly annoying as i just did a clean install of my computer. I know its not my hardware. Now i dont have proper functioning computer!
